26 People Confirmed Dead Due To Outbreak of Lassa Fever And Meningitis In 2019

Lassa fever and cerebro spinal meningitis (CSM) is known to have claimed the lives of 26 individuals and infected 88 others in 26 states including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) stated in its report captioned Week on the 4th day of January from January 21 – 27, 2019, that over 77 new cases of the fever were recorded in 13 states including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

A breakdown of the states in which Lassa fever and cerebro spinal meningitis (CSM) has raged included Edo (24); Ondo (28); Ebonyi (five); Bauchi (three); Plateau (five); Taraba (three); Gombe (one); Kaduna (one); Kwara (one); FCT (one); Benue (two), Rivers (one); Kogi (one) and Enugu (one).

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) also made it clear that there were 11 new deaths in Edo; two in Ondo; one for Benue and one also in Rivers respectively.

Other states in which there were recorded deaths included Plateau (two); Taraba (one) and Bauchi (one).

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), they stated that from January 1 to 27 this year (2019), over 538 suspected cases of Lassa fever and cerebro spinal meningitis (CSM) were reported in over 16 states, while over 213 incidents were confirmed to have had the diseases, two were not sure and over 325 proved negative.

The disease centre also stated that since the diseases broke out in the year 2019, there had been 42 deaths which has been recorded so far up till this point.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) also noted that states which include Edo, Ondo, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Ebonyi, Plateau, Taraba, FCT, Adamawa and Gombe, Kaduna, Kwara, Benue, Rivers Kogi and Enugu) had previously recorded at least one incident from this year (2019).

It is now a case of trying to curb the spread of the diseases and possibly eliminate the disease entirely from the country.
