27 People Confirmed Dead As Terrorists Attack Church In South Philippines

Over 18 and 27 people were murdered when terrorists bombed a church on a southern Philippine island, the base of Islamist militants, the military said in a statement today.

This incident occurs days after voters backed the creation of a new Muslim autonomous region.

The first bomb blast happened inside the Catholic Church on war-torn Jolo this morning as mass was being celebrated, and there came another bomb explosion which happened outside as troops responded, the regional military spokesman said.

It was also known that the victims were churchgoers together with soldiers.

The likes of the door, pews and glass windows of Mount Carmel Cathedral were destroyed through the bomb blasts, with bodies found across the ground of the church.

The spokesman to President Rodrigo Duterte condemned the incident stating that it is an act of terrorism and murder.

The spokesman to the President, Salvador Panelo said:

“We will pursue to the ends of the earth the ruthless perpetrators behind this dastardly crime until every killer is brought to justice and put behind bars. The law will give them no mercy,”

The regional military spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Gerry Besana, stated thay five soldiers and a member of the coast guard as well as 12 civilians were killed while 83 others were wounded.

The regional police chief, identified to be Graciano Mijares made it clear that the death toll was put at 27 and 77 people were confirmed wounded.

A military report stated that the second bomb was left in the utility box of a motorcycle in the parking area outside the church.

However, the army has come out to say that it has carried some of the wounded persons by air to the nearby city of Zamboanga for medical treatment.

Stong sourced has it that the famous Abu Sayyaf kidnap-for-ransom group could be behind the bomb blast.
