5 Soldiers Killed in Boko Haram Attack of Army Base

Five soldiers serving in the Nigerian Army were murdered at the weekend when members of the Boko Haram insurgents launched a suprise attack on a military base located in Yobe, Northeast, Nigeria.

A military officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said a band of the Islamic terrorists, attacked a military facility in the town of Buni Yadi in the early hours of Saturday. The attack led to an “intense battle”, in which five gallant soldiers lost their lives.

“We lost five soldiers in the attack, including a captain who was recently deployed to Buni Yadi,” he said.

“We are still trying to have a sense of the casualties on the part of the terrorists as their bodies are scattered in the bush.” said the officer.

Following the Army’s victory at camp zero, it is believed that the terrorists have regrouped, after a large number of their force were driven out of the Sambisa Forest.

The Nigerian Army still hierarchy, strongly believes that the dare-devil insurgents have been soundly defeated in view of the pressure being mounted by the Army to forestall reprisal attacks.

Last month, President Buhari said in Abuja that the insurgency, which began in 2009, was in its final stages, and that the terrorists have been “technically” defeated.

But questions will be asked about how the rebels were able to attack such a sizeable military base and inflict casualties and the extent to which they pose a security threat.

Such attacks have been a common feature of the insurgency, with Boko Haram in the past regularly over-running military bases and seizing weaponry.

Spokesman for the attacked base in Buni Yadi base, Lieutenant George Okupe, said: “There was indeed an attack in Buni Yadi by terrorists which was repelled.”

“I cannot confirm any casualty for now. All I can say is that some soldiers are missing in action.”

Buni Yadi town is situated at some 65 kilometres from the Yobe state capital, Damaturu. The town was overrun by terrorists in February 2014. That same month, Boko Haram terrorists attacked a boys boarding school and killed 43 students.
