Algerians celebrate after president resigns [VIDEO]

Algerians have taken to the streets to celebrate the resignation of their president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika after weeks of massive protests.

President Abdelaziz Bouteflika had been sick for over six years after he suffered a stroke but rather than resign, he avoided public events in a bid to hold on to power.

However, in a recent development, the President announced his resignation with immediate effect in a letter published by the State News Agency, APS on Tuesday (May 03 2019).

President Bouteflika was forced to resign after the army chief demanded action to remove him from office.

Algerians are so delighted with the news of Bouteflika’s resignation that they honked their car horns all night in celebration.

The protesters say although they are happy with the resignation, they want a total over haul of the previous government’s system.

One protester said:

This is just a little victory – the biggest is still to come.

Another said:

God willing, we will have a 100% democratic transition, this is very important. We need to remove the whole previous regime and that is the hardest thing.
