Andros Townsend Screamer Against Man City Wins PL Goal Of The Season

Andros Townsend of Crystal Palace’s rocket goal against Manchester City in December has been announced as the Carling Premier League goal of the 2018/19 season.

A half-clearance fell into the path of Townsend and the Crystal Palace winger from about 25 yards away from goal hit it first time on the volley to send a rocket shot past the reach of City’s goalie, Ederson and into the top right corner of goal.

Jeffrey Schlupp and Milivojevic then added to wrap up the game despite goals from Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin de Bruyne.

The stunning strike from Townsend helped his side make an unbelievable 3-2 win over league champions, Manchester City, topping a 10-goal shortlist of every goal of the month winner including Vincent Kompany’s recent screamer against Leicester City.

Other contenders included goals from Fulham’s Jean Michael Seri and Andre Schurrle, Newcastle defender Fabian Schar, Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge, Tottenham forward Son Heung-Min and Brighton and Hove Albion winger Anthony Knockaert.

Townsend while explaining the goal said:

“We got a free-kick and the ball’s dropped out of the air.

“I just thought, Yeah, it’s sat up perfectly, I’m going to hit this.

“I didn’t really know how good a goal it was. Everyone was saying, ‘It was incredible, it was the best goal I’ve ever seen.

“I just thought it was a volley from outside the box and it’s not until I watched it back, then I thought, ‘Oh wow, maybe that is a bit special.”

The strike becomes the third official winner of the Premier League goal of the season award after Emre Can’s strike for Liverpool against Watford in 2016/17 and Sofiane Boufal’s goal for Southampton against West Brom last season.

Van Dijk and Pep Guardiola also had their quivers full with the pair scooping the Premier League player of the season and manager of the season awards respectively.
