The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, David Lyon, has been declared the winner of the Bayelsa governorship election.
The APC won in six out of eight local government areas, according to results announced by the Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Faraday Orumwense, Vice-chancellor, University of Benin, at the INEC Collation Centre in Yenagoa.
The APC polled 352,552 votes while the PDP polled 143,172.
This is the first time the People’s Democratic People (PDP) would lose a governorship election in the state since the nation returned to democracy in 1999.
The six local government areas won by the opposition party in the state are Brass; Nembe; Ogbia, Southern Ijaw, Ekeremor and Yenagoa while the PDP won in the Sagbama and Kolokuma/Opokuma local government areas.
The APC polled 7, 831 votes while the PDP scored 60,339 votes In the Sagbama LGA, Bayelsa East Senatorial District while the result from Nembe LGA, Bayelsa East showed that the APC garnered 83,041 votes while the PDP polled 874 votes.
PDP also won in Kolouma/Opokuma LGA, Bayelsa Central with 15,360 votes where the APC scored 8,934 votes. Ap recorded victory in the Brass LGA, Bayelsa East with 23,831 votes while the PDP polled 10,410 votes.
The APC also defeated the incumbent in the capital with 24,607 to their 19,184 votes.
APC cleared former President Goodluck Jonathan’s Ogbia LGA, Bayelsa East, garnering 58,016 votes while PDP polled 13,763 votes.
Southern Ijaw Local Government was a landslide for the APC where its candidate polled 124,803 votes while his rival got 4,898 votes.
The opposition party also defeated PDP in Ekeremor LGA by polling 21,489 to the PDP’s candidate’s 18,344 votes.
