Aubameyang Failed To Save Gabon’s Head As Burundi Make Their First Ever AFCON Finals

Pierre Emerick Aubameyang was kept in check by a resilient Burundi defence to ensure that Burundi got the draw they needed to qualify for their first ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Saturday.

While Burundi needed only to draw to ensure their qualifications into the AFCON finals, Gabon who played hosts for the competition two years ago needed to win in Bujumbura to join Group C winners, Mali in the expanded 24-team finals to be hosted by Egypt within the months of June and July.

Burundi becomes the third country to qualify for the AFCON finals for the first time after Madagascar and Mauritania had earlier clinched onto qualification spots.

Fans of Burundi went wild as the win and ultimately qualification sparked wild celebrations in th tiny east African country.

Didier Ovono, Gabon’s veteran goalkeeper repeatedly saved Gabon in the night with super saves keeping Burundi at bay for long periods of the game.

It was Cedric Amissi who broke the deadlock in the 75th minute as he sent loud shouts and chants from the Burundi stand with his impeccable goal.

That still, celebrations were placed on hold when Gabon equalized eight minutes from time as Burundi defender, Omar Ngandu turned the ball into his own net.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had a largely quiet and couldn’t help his team get the second goal and much needed win to progress to the finals of the competition.

Saido Berahino who at one point played for England at a youth level before switching allegiance to Burundi must be praised for playing a key role for his side in the game..

Burundi known as the Swallows finished second in Group C behind the Eagles of Mali with 10 points from six games.

Gabon on the other hand ended the qualifiers in third position with a maximum total of eight points from six games.
