A Thai soldier, Sergeant Major Jakrapanth Thomma, who went on a killing spree in Korat, 155 miles from Thai capital Bangkok has been shot dead by security forces.
The rogue soldier was shot dead by Thai security forces after holing himself up in a basement for more than 14 hours.
The Sergeant major was said to have killed his commanding officer and a fellow soldier over a financial dispute before shooting at least 19 at a shopping mall while posting selfies on Facebook.
According to reports, Thomma hijacked an army vehicle, shot an officer and soldiers, and sprayed a volley of bullets at civilians. This made him hide in the basement of Terminal 21 shopping mall in Nakhon Ratchasima, a city 155 miles northeast of Bangkok.
His murderous rampage started at his barracks at around 3 pm on Saturday, where he executed his commanding officer along with another soldier, before commandeering a Humvee and tearing away from the scene.
While driving along the motorway toward the shopping centre, the 32-year-old opened fire on civilians at a house and a Buddhist temple before making his way inside the mall – where he was caught on CCTV stalking the corridors.
Thai media reported that the suspect’s mother was taken to the mall to try to persuade him to give up. She was led to a police car and heard saying ‘why did he do it?’ with tears in her eyes.
The lucky ones took to their heels as some were rescued by Thai commandos from Terminal 21 shopping mall, who evacuated them.
During the evacuation, Police from the Crime Suppression Division urged fleeing shoppers to ‘raise their hands’ and identify themselves on the ground floor.
