Biography of Bovi

Abovi Ugboma popularly referred to as Bovi is a famous Nigerian comedian, actor and writer. He’s one of the renowned comedians who metes out original and intellectual jokes.

Early life and background of Bovi

Bovi was born on the 25th of September, 1979 in Benin City, Edo, Nigeria to Chief Eddie and Margaret Ugbomah. He attended UNIBEN staff school for his elementary education before proceeding to government college, Ughelli for his secondary education. Due to fear and disciplinary reasons, his parents removed him from boarding school and enrolled him at Edokpolor grammar school in Benin city where they lived. That move seemed futile as he had to leave the school for his third secondary school, Boys model secondary school, Onicha-Olona, an all boarding school. On completion of his secondary education, he went ahead to earn a degree in Theatre Arts from Delta State University, Abraka. For his National Youth Service Corp (NYSC), he was posted to Kogi State and served at National Television Authority (NTA), Lokoja.

His Comedy Career

The Delta State descent relocated to Lagos with the intention of marketing his script to one of Africa’s popular actor, Richard Mofe-Damijo. Fortune smiled on him and he became RMD’s personal assistant from 2004 to 2006. He commenced his comedy career in April 2007 after starring in his self-written sitcom, The Extended Family. The show gained recognition and popularity and the following year saw him leading shows and events in Nigeria. Having featured in Opa Williams’ Night of a thousand laughs, Basketmouth’s Uncensored and Lord of the Ribs, Bovi became became one of the most sought-after comedians in Nigeria. By 2014, The Extended family star had started his own show, Bovi- Man on fire, featuring international acts like Ja Rule and Ashanti.

Bovi has hosted the show in several cities around the world: United States, London, Melbourne, and Toronto. In 2017, after a three year hiatus, the Man on Fire franchise returned to Lagos and it was the most successful ever recorded. According to him, the fourth edition which was held in Lagos, April 2019 would be the last of the man on fire franchise. In 2018, Bovi commenced a new website series titled “BACK TO SCHOOL” which he uploads on his YouTube channel. The father of three has collaborated with other Nigerian comedians like I Go Save, I Go Dye, Julius Agwu, Okey Bakassi amongst others.

His Acting Career

The comic act dipped his toes into the waters of the Nigerian movie industry by premiering his first movie It’s Her Day on 9 September 2016. The movie got him the AMVCA awards for the Best actor in Comedy. Though the film didn’t gain mainstream publicity, it went ahead to garner about N55 million in four weeks.
