Biography of Broda Shaggi AKA Samuel Perry
Animashaun Samuel Perry, popularly known by his moniker, Broda Shaggi is a Nigerian comedian, actor, singer, scriptwriter and voiceover artiste. The incorporation of street culture and attitude in addressing societal issues has made him a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry. With a huge following of 4.7 million, the young talent is fast becoming a household name.
Early life and background of Broda Shaggi
Broda Shaggi was born on the 6th of July, 1993 in Lagos State, Nigeria as the first child in a family of four children (all boys). After completing his primary and secondary education, he proceeded to study Creative arts at the University of Lagos.
His Rise to Fame
Broda Shaggi kick-started his career in his university days. While studying, he acted in various stage plays, learnt visual arts and honed his skills as a painter in order to fend for himself. He formed a 10-member group called ‘The Stage Addicts’, who performed at several shows; they were opportuned to perform before dignitaries like the former governor of Lagos State and ex President Goodluck Jonathan. According to him, his acting career was inspired by his late father who taught drama at Mayflower Junior School, Ikenne, Ogun State. He has played roles and characters like Inspector Perry, a policeman; Professor Dele, and Akonni Ibadan. Broda Shaggi also dabble into comedy, a talent which has seen him rise to prominence. In an interview, he stated,
“Comedy is what I love doing and I like to make it as real as possible so that people can relate with it. I like to make people laugh; so, when they watch me, all they do is laugh despite the situation of the country. My aim is to affect people with comedy in a good way. That was what prompted me into doing comedy in the first place.”
Broda Shaggi gained massive recognition and popularity after the release of “Jesus appeared in Mushin” comedy skit. In the skit, he was asked by Aunty Shaggi what he would do if Jesus appeared in that area, he said he will deploy area boys to get hold of him, take him to Quilox; treat him to some drinks and collect money from him. He portrayed himself as an area boy in the video with the “oya hit me” slang.
The video became viral on all social media platforms garnering thousands of views and comments. Although the video was a commercial success, it was heavily criticized by veteran actors who advised he take it down because according to them, it made mockery of Jesus Christ. In response to the critics, he stated that he was an actor and there was no better way to express the character except that way. The name “Broda Shaggi” came about after his visit to the mechanic’s workshop in December 2017. At the workshop, he overheard some guys playing around characters “Mushin, Sule and Jesu”. He liked and enjoyed the funny situation thus adopting it in his comedy skit. He thought of names that will suit the character, he eventually settled for Broda Shaggi which have stuck till date.
His comedy skits are inspired by his background and creative works of Lasisi Elenu, Ogbeni Adun, Arole, and Twyse.
Prior his comedy career, he had featured in movies like Dear Mummy B, Unfinished Business, Ghetto Breed and others. He had also worked with media outfits like ROK Studios and Africa Magic. He cited Uche Jombo for being instrumental in his success story. According to him, the sultry actress offered him a platform to exhibit his talent in her upcoming TV series.
The social media influencer also delved into music having two albums to his name, Oya Hit Me Skits, Vol. 1, released in 2018 and Fine Boy Agbero (Volume 1) (EP) released on May 1, 2020.

The comic sensation has bagged a number of endorsement deals with corporate brands like Globacom, Fairmoney, Tradefada, amongst others.

Broda Shaggi is still unmarried. There are speculations that DJ Cuppy and the instagram sensation might be an item. It was also rumoured that the comedian was dating Aunty Shaggi, the interviewer in his skits. He has come out to debunk the claims stating that they are friends and there are no strings attached.
