Biography of Clarence Peters

Clarence Abiodun Peters is a Nigerian music video director, filmmaker and cinematographer. He is the founder and CEO of Capital Dream Pictures, a production company that specialises in the realms of the performing arts, film and video. He is also the  of Capital Hill Records, a record label home to Chidinma, Tha Suspect and Illbliss. His name is synonymous with top quality musical videos which catches the attention of viewers. He is an individual who, though having two entertainment icons as parents, has been able to achieve a lot for himself and made his mark in the entertainment industry.

Early life and background of Clarence Peters

Clarence was born on 20 December, 1983 into a prominent family. He is the son of Sir Shina Peters, the popular Afro-Juju legend and Clarion Chukwura, a delectable actress. He has two step brothers, Brian and Robert. For his primary education, he attended BI primary school and Government College, Ikorodu for his secondary education. On completion of his secondary education, he worked at Alpha Visions for three years before proceeding to study Cinematography in City Varsity, a film school in Cape Town, South Africa. Clarence once played football as a child.

His mother once revealed in an interview that she intended to abort Clarence while he was in the womb, but changed her mind because of her belief that Peters was the reincarnation of her father who she lost when she was 11 years old. After his study in South Africa, he returned to Nigeria and collaborated with a group of filmmakers to establish the Alliance Film Company, which is now known as the Allied Film Company. He worked with the company for a year and eventually started his own production company. Clarence is inspired by the works of Steven Spielberg, Hype Williams, DJ Tee, Akin Alabi, Wudi Awa, HG2films, Director dove Kemi Adetiba, Sesan, Aje, and AK 1.

His Rise to Fame

During his secondary school days, Clarence met Tha Suspect, a record producer and recording artist. The two started Capital Hill Records after becoming acquainted with each other. While in their search of a good female rapper, they signed Kel after being introduced to by Terry tha Rapman. In September 2011, Kel’s recording contract got terminated due to a squabble she had with Clarence. She was able to release her debut studio album, The Investment, while signed to the label. Some times later, the label partnered with the Goretti Company, a management company owned by Illbliss.

In 1998, he was part of the team that produced  Mobil-sponsored music video for a documentary on AIDS.  The ace video director directed 40 episodes of the TV series Everyday People. He has worked with artistes across a variety of genres and generations, making successes out of their music videos and eventually their brands. Clarence has directed music videos for recording artists like Darey, Davido, Tiwa Savage, Phyno, Durella, Wizkid amongst others. In 2012, he shot the music video for Shuga’s theme song. Clarence Peters has also directed a good number of documentaries, TV commercials, short films, and TV features.

In 2014, he peaked 2nd on Channel O’s list of the Top 10 Most Visionary Music Video Directors. The film maker ventured into film making in 2015. He released his first independent film; a 25-minute horror film Hex. The first official trailer was released on September 28, 2015.

Controversies

In January 2014, a copyright infringement was filed against Peters after the release of Tiwa Savage’s “Eminado” video. It was alleged that he stole the vintage nature of the “Asinamali” video which was released by Tumi and the Volume to honour the artistic works of Seydou Keïta. Tiwa’s ex husband, Tunji “Tee Billz” Balogun shed some light on the controversy.

On June 21, 2013, Clarence was accused of plagiarising the contents of Slaughterhouse’s “My Life” video and infusing them into Ice Prince’s VIP visual. In February 2014, Ice Prince defended the actions of Clarence Peters, stating that he initiated the ideas for the shoot and he’s culpable for his actions.

In May 2020, the ace video director was embroiled in the death of video vixen, Love Divine, popularly known as Picturekodak. It was reported that Picturekodak allegedly got electrocuted on April 29, 2020, while using her phone, which was plugged to a socket in Peters’ house in Omole Phase. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Clarence Peters and his crew members were arrested on May 2, 2020, after public outcry about the circumstances surrounding the dancer’s death. They were granted bail pending the outcome of investigation.
