Biography of DJ Cuppy

Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola professionally known as DJ Cuppy is a Nigerian disc jockey, singer, record producer, entrepreneur and philanthropist. DJ Cuppy is undoubtedly one of the most popular female DJs in Nigeria and Africa.

Early life and background of DJ Cuppy

DJ Cuppy was born on the 11th of November, 1992 in Lagos, Nigeria, to Nigerian business mogul, Mr Femi Otedola and Mrs Nana Otedola. She is the second of four children. Her other siblings are Olawunmi Christie, Prince Fewa, and Temi Otedola. The Otedolas lived in Ilupeju for six years before moving to Ikeja. DJ Cuppy completed her primary and secondary education in Nigeria before relocating to London for her GCSEs and A-Levels. She attained a bachelor’s degree in business and economics from King’s College, London in July, 2014. Having completed her undergraduate studies, she proceeded to obtain a master’s degree in music business from New York University in 2015.

Her Rise to Fame

Growing up, DJ Cuppy was passionate about music, she developed DJ skills by watching YouTube videos as well as watching DJs do their thing in the night clubs. She envisioned herself being a powerful and influential DJ like them so she bought some equipment, learnt and gained mastery of disc jockey.

DJ officially became a DJ at age 18, after her A-levels. She performed at clubs and event places in London. She became well known for her DJing skills. What started out as a hobby has become a full-blown career for the billionaire heiress. Her impeccable skills gave her a chance of interning at Jay-Z’s Roc Nation headquarters, where she obtained a first-hand experience and knowledge of the International music industry.

Her Career

DJ Cuppy’s outstanding performances has helped her gain recognition both internationally and locally. She was the resident DJ at the 2014 MTV Africa Music Awards held in Durban. She has played at the Tatler and Christie’s Art Ball in London, and at the Financial Times Luxury Summit in Mexico City.

In July 2014, she released her first mixtape, House of Cuppy which saw her usher in a new sound dubbed Neo-Afrobeats – an electric blend of Tropical House and Afrobeats music. The mixtape was launched successfully in London, New York and Lagos. Artists like Tiwa Savage, Kcee, Naeto C, Dr. Sid, Alexandra Burke, Chidinma, Wizkid, Illbliss and Suspect were featured on it.

That same year, Cuppy also launched the London-based music management and content production business, Red Velvet Music Group. The following year was succeeded by an 8-country tour, Cuppy Takes Africa which later became an 8-episode documentary series on Fox Life Africa. During her tour, she visited Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda and South Africa. The “Cuppy Takes Africa” tour included performances, major artist collaborations, and charitable engagements supported by GTB Bank and the Dangote Foundation. That same year, DJ Cuppy launched her second mixtape which was titled House of Cuppy 2.

In March 2017, she released two songs, “Vibe” and “The way I am“, which appeared on the “Afrobeats” EP by Young Paris. The talented DJ decided to explore her singing abilities by releasing her first official single “Green light ” featuring Tekno in October 13, 2017.

Following the success of the first single, she went ahead to release her second official single “Vybe” featuring Ghanaian rapper, Sarkodie. Her ace performances has seen her play at Oil Barons Charity in Dubai, MTV2’s Uncommon sense with Charlamagne Tha God, SXSW festival in Texas and President Muhammad Buhari’s inauguration in 2015. The name “Cuppy” came about from her love for cupcakes, red velvet to be precise.

DJ Cuppy has being featured by Forbes Woman Africa Magazine, The Guardian Life magazine and Glitz Africa. Cuppy, as well as her younger sister Temi, were featured in a British Documentary titled Lagos To London: Britain’s New Super Rich. The documentary showed the expensive lifestyle and taste of both sisters and their journey to live outside their dad’s shadow.

DJ Cuppy was appointed by Nigeria’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation as the tourism ambassador for the country’s “Fascinating Nigeria” campaign in April 2014.

She was endorsed as one of Pepsi’s DJ ambassadors, on the 20th of March 2018.

DJ Cuppy became the Global Citizen Education Ambassador on the 5th of June 2018.

Cuppy became Samsung’s ambassador in 2019.

On the 11th of March 2019, DJ Cuppy announced her partnership with Maybelline as an ‘IT GIRL’. She intends to use her role as a Maybelline ambassador to drive inclusiveness and project Africa to the world. She would reflect the company’s values by touching lives and empowering women.

Tiger beer endorsed her as its ambassador on the 12th of June 2019.

She is an ambassador of Save the Children UK.

Her Humanitarian Works

DJ Cuppy launched the Cuppy Foundation in July 2018. In November 2019, the foundation organized the Gold Gala in order to raise funds for the Save the Children initiative. Nigerian business tycoon, Dangote and her father, Femi Otedola donated to the cause.

The fair-complexioned performer hails from a wealthy home. She is the granddaughter of former Lagos State governor, Sir Michael Otedola. Her father is billionaire businessman, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, who is also the chairman of Forte Oil PLC, an importer of fuel products in Nigeria while her mother, Nana Otedola, is the Managing Director of Garment Care. DJ Cuppy has been previously linked with former Nigerian international footballer Victor Anichebe. They broke up due to timezone and career differences. They’ve remained friends ever since. It was rumoured that she once dated music entrepreneur Asa Asika and boxing champion, Anthony Joshua.
