Biography of DJ Spinall

Sodamola Oluseye Damola popularly known as DJ Spinall or The Cap (The Crazy Azz Party) is a Nigerian disc jockey, record producer, songwriter, label executive, and media personality. He first gained prominence in 2004, while working as a radio DJ at Raypower 100.5 FM. He is known to mix many genres from pop, electronic, to the famous Afrobeats very smoothly. DJ Spinall is unarguably one of the most sought-after DJ in Nigeria and West Africa, headlining major concerts in over 15 countries and counting.

Early life and background of DJ Spinall

DJ Spinall was born June 2, 1981 in Lagos, Nigeria as the third child in a family of five. He had his primary and secondary school education in Lagos State before proceeding to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Electrical Engineering from Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ago Iwoye, Ogun State.

His Rise to Fame

As a child, Spinall listened to some vinyl records been played by his parents and this fueled his passion for music.
DJ Spinall developed interest in Dj’ing in his secondary school days as a social prefect. Spinall was always seen eagerly watching the DJs do their thing in parties. What actually started as a hobby became a full-blown career.

His Music Career

The name “DJ Spinall” came about before his record label signing to Mavin Records in 2013. His signature style “TheCAP” showcases his style adventure and celebrates the African prints thus giving him his brand power and identity. He has worked at Ray Power, Eko FM, Beat FM Ibadan and Lagos, then he performed at Industry Nite, which gave him a bigger platform to show his craft in the industry. He did that for five and a half years.

He was the official DJ to Wande Coal while he was affiliated with Mavin Records. DJ Spinall launched TheCAPMusic, a record label/management company in 2014. He released his first hit single “GbaGbe E” featuring Burna Boy, same year. He later dropped his debut album “My Story” in 2015. Top Boy, as he is also called has released successive albums like TEN (2016) Dreams (2017) Iyanu (2018). Nowo, a lead single off his fourth album featured on OkayAfrica as one of 15 biggest Nigerian songs of 2018. It also topped the MTV Base Official Naija Top 10 Countdown. “Baba” featuring Kizz Daniel, peaked on MTV Base Top 20 Hottest Naija tracks of 2018.

In 2015, Spinall became the first African DJ to perform at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. He is also the first Nigerian DJ to tour 5 cities in United States, including New York, Miami, Houston, Austin, and Washington, D.C. In 2017, he was the official DJ for BET Awards in Los Angeles, California. On 21 April 2019, Spinall became the first Nigerian DJ to headline a show at XOYO in London and the first Nigerian DJ to perform at the Glastonbury Festival on 29 June 2019. On 11 September 2018, He signed international major deal with Atlantic Records UK and a publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music UK. He also appeared on Beyonce’s documentary, The Lion King: The Gift.

The internationally acclaimed singer has collaborated with Wizkid, Wande Coal, Davido, 2Baba, Tiwa Savage amongst others. DJ Spinall has given stellar performances at events like One Lagos Brand Launch (2016) MixMag “The LAB” New York (2018) One Africa Music Fest, London (2018) One Africa Music Fest, Dubai (2019). The self acclaimed DJ has gone on several music tours to cities like Washington, D.C., Minnesota, New York City, Miami, Toronto, Dallas, Atlanta, Indiana and Jacksonville, Florida.

His Endorsements

DJ Spinall bagged endorsement deal with Smirnoff as its first African ambassador. The contract has been renewed four times. In 2018, he was named Pepsi DJ brand ambassador. He featured in the Pepsi World Cup campaign.

In January, 2020, the Nigerian disc jockey revealed on microblogging platform, instagram that he’s in a relationship. He further told the ladies to ward off.
