Biography of Ebuka-Obi Uchendu

Ebuka-Obi Uchendu is a Nigerian lawyer, television presenter, writer, fashion icon and media personality. He is known for anchoring the reality show Big Brother Naija, the fashion and lifestyle TV programme, Rubbin’ Minds, The Spot and Men’s Corner on Ebonylife Television.

Early life and background of Ebuka-Obi Uchendu

Ebuka was born on the 14th July, 1982 in Benin, Edo state to a banker father and a mother who is a nurse. He is the third of four children. He had his primary and secondary education in Benin before relocating to Abuja with his family. He had his secondary school education at the Kings College, Abuja and then proceeded to the University of Lagos, where he obtained a degree in Law. Ebuka holds two Masters degrees (Intellectual property and communications law) from the American University, Washington DC.

His Career

In 2006, the Anambra state indigene contested in the maiden edition of the popular reality show Big Brother Nigeria, finishing eighth place in the competition. He rose to prominence after participating in the show. This saw him signing endorsement deal with major telecommunication brand as well as a popular brewing company. In January 2017, he was announced as the host of the second season of Big Brother Naija as well as the third season.

As a TV host, he has anchored Friend or Foe on NTA, GLO Show, as well as Guinness’ Greatness TV.

As a writer, he wrote a weekly column called Contrast with a Nigerian national daily newspaper, This day for 4 years and published articles for What’s New & Ace Magazines, YNaija, 360Nobs, Breaking Times and StyleVitae.

During the 2011 general elections in Nigeria, he co-presented the presidential debate alongside Chimamanda Adichie. The debate centered on youth issues and was broadcasted live across the country. He also work as a master of ceremony (MC) for ceremonies, and concerts.

In 2013, Ebuka became the new host of the show, Rubbin’ Minds. He has interviewed the likes of Banky W, Gbenga Sesan, Seun Kuti, Oluchi Onweagba, Davido, Japheth J. Omojuwa and Chika Unigwe on the platform. That same year, he became one of the co-hosts of The Spot which airs on EbonyLife TV.

In July 2014, he worked alongside Arit Okpo on the new chat show Naija Politics. Two years later, he became the host of Men’s Corner, Nigeria’s first all male TV talk show.

In April 2020, the Rubbin’ Minds talk show host was announced as anchor of new TV show “Judging matters“.

The On-air personality who is known for his fashion sense never fails to steal the show. His outfits are always showstoppers. Ebuka has consistently been featured on best-dressed lists for social events. Due to his intriguing style and stunning outfit choices, he’s considered a fashion icon. In 2017, he successfully broke the internet when he wore a unique Agbada design to the traditional wedding ceremony of Adesua Etomi and Bankole Wellington. He literally stole the spotlight.

Controversy

In 2018, it was reported that Cee-C, a housemate in the 3rd edition of the Big Brother Naija show had worked her way into the reality TV show. This caused an uproar on social media. There were speculations that the housemate and TV host were in a relationship. Some claimed she is his sister-in-law, due to the striking resemblance between her and his wife and others claimed she was his ex-girlfriend. The controversy was quickly debunked by Ebuka on Twitter while his wife also took to Instagram to disassociate herself from the rumors.

Ebuka is married to HR manager, Cynthia Obianodo. Cynthia is the daughter of the CEO of popular transportation company, Young Shall Grow motors. They have two children together.

Awards and Nominations

He was nominated in the On-Air Personality category of The Future Awards for 2007 and 2008 consecutively.

In 2011, he was selected as a Global Shaper, an exclusive group of young emerging leaders across the world – with the World Economic Forum.

He was also nominated for the category of Outstanding TV Presenter of the Year (Male) at the Nigerian Broadcaster’s Merit Awards in 2013, 2014 and 2015 which he won.

In 2013, he was honored by the Federal Government as one of the Best 100 Young Nigerians in one of the events to mark Nigeria’s 100th anniversary as a union.
