Gloria Oloruntobi popularly known as Maraji is a Nigerian comedienne, content creator and instagram sensation known for her comedy skits. With a huge following of 1.2 million on instagram and 69,000 on twitter, Maraji is one of the female comediennes known for creating skits about everything from gossip, mimicking, friendship to film and TV. Through the years, she has earned a reputation in the industry by mimicking numerous Nigerian peculiarities for humour and empirical relevance.
Early life and background of Maraji
Maraji was born on the 6th of February, 1997 in Lagos, Nigeria. The Edo State born has three siblings, a sister and two brothers. She bagged a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Covenant University at age 19.
Her Rise to Fame
Maraji commenced her career by lip-syncing videos of popular songs. While in her third year at the University, she did a lip-sync of Nicki Minaj’s song. Her friend prodded her to post it on social media but Maraji was reluctant and afraid she will be mocked. Her friend posted the video without Maraji’s permission and the lip-sync video went viral, making her gain popularity and recognition.The success of the video saw her producing more videos.
She went further to release lip sync videos of Reekado Banks, Koredo Bello, Skales and others. The artistes reposted the videos making her gain more fans as instagram users flocked to her page wanting more. Following her huge fan base on instagram, Maraji delved into comedy and since then she’s been creating relatable content that thrills fans. Currently, she has over 1 million instagram followers who she’s been entertaining with funny comedy skits. Maraji depicts the everyday life of an average Nigerian in her comedy videos.
The social media influencer has featured in Falz’s “Something light” and Yemi Alade’s “Single and Searching”. Just like her contemporaries, Taooma and Twyse, she acts more than two roles, effortlessly switching into different characters and voices in a comedy skit. The family oriented comic actor sometimes features her mother in her skits.
Maraji also promotes brands on her instagram page, charging up to N500, 000 per promotion. She’s inspired by the works of Superwoman, a comedienne who owns her own YouTube channel.
For her creative process, she says she pens her ideas down, before spending two hours shooting and editing. The entire process for those skits, takes, “a day or two before the final content is ready to go up.”
Controversy
On August 12, 2019, there was an uproar on the social media space over Maraji’s controversial comments on religion. So many people took to social media to air their different opinions about her sentiments. The content creator who enjoys massive following wrote on her instagram page:
”There is only one way to heaven, No Allah, No Buddha, No Krishna, No Evolution, Only Jesus. ”Not Trying To Offend Anyone But The Truth Is Quite Offensive”.
The comic sensation who seems unapologetic went ahead to add:

These statements incited many Muslim folks who expressed their grievances and disappointment. This caused mixed reactions amongst her followers, some took to her defense while others slammed her for her tweets. Maraji who isn’t new to controversies was once embroiled in a controversy, setting Twitter ablaze with a performance of ‘Jesus embarrass Wo Mu’, a song originally sung by Chinyere Udoma.
