Biography of Omah Lay

Stanley Omah Didia known professionally as Omah Lay is an Afro-fusion singer, songwriter and record producer. With vocal delivery which breathes life and emotions, Omah Lay is the next big thing. The new act possess a musical style which is a blend of Fireboy’s creative penmanship and Wizkid’s vibes. Pegged the new face of afro-beat, he’s one of the young acts to watch out for in 2020.

Early life and background of Omah Lay

Omah Lay was born on the 19th of May, 1997 in Port-Harcourt, South- Southern part of Nigeria. He spent his teenage years at Marine Base. A native of Ikwerre, Rivers State, Omah Lay is the grandson of Adalolo who played the drums for the late 70s Highlife sensation – Celestine Ukwu. Omah Lay got his stage name from a fusion of his real name and his local dialect, Omah was coined from his name while Lay is the name his tribesmen call people who live far away. Omah Lay grew up listening to the tunes from Duncan Mighty and Grammy-nominated Burna Boy,but it was rap lord, Drake who inspired him to pursue the same path as his grandfather.

His Rise to Fame

Hailing from a musical family, Omah Lay started producing music at age sixteen after constantly spending his time shuffling between the studio and his home. As a child, he wanted to be a rapper; he was a member of a rap group with stage name “Lil King”. The budding star has worked as a songwriter and producer for several artists. The lack of accolades and credit from the artistes he’s worked with spurred him to release his first single “Don’t Disturb” in April 2019. Don’t Disturb focuses on proving the critics wrong.

A month after releasing his first single, Omah Lay released ‘Hello Brother‘, a soulful tune proclaiming undying love for his brother. His two singles enjoyed massive airplay across the country, leading to a record deal with emerging music frontier KeyQaad in July 2019. This led to his relocation to Lagos, the entertainment hub of Nigeria and West Africa. He is currently signed to the Dvpper Music record label.

In January 2020, the fast rising artiste released a teaser to his new single “Bad Influence” on his Instagram page, garnering critical acclaims. Bad Influence gained traction on Digital Stores. On February 14, 2020, Omah Lay released another hit single “You” a love-themed Afrobeats medley filled with multisyllabic rhymes. You achieved appreciable success as it was listed amongst top songs on various sites.

Get Layd, a five-track debut EP was released on the 22nd 0f May which peaked at No. 1 on Nigeria’s most valuable charting metric, Apple Music charts. Four songs on the EP occupied the top four spots on the Apple Music top 100 songs within the country. The instant commercial success saw the love-laden EP becoming the most streamed Afrobeat album on Digital stores like Audiomack and Deezer and earning Omah Lay Apple Music Favorite New Artiste of The Month of June in Africa. On July 3rd 2020, he was elected as the debut star for Apple’s Africa Rising Campaign which spots a talent in Africa and projects them all through the continent and internationally.
