Biography of Omawumi

Omawumi is a Nigerian singer and songwriter known for infusing elements of soul and R & B into her bright, funk-laden pop sound. She was the first runner-up of West African Idols 2007 edition. Unlike her contemporaries who started music at early years, she launched her musical career after the West African Idols reality show.

Early life and background of Omawumi

Omawumi Megbele was born April 13, 1982 to Chief Dr Frank and Mrs Aya Megbele. She is of itsekiri ancestry from Delta State. For her primary education, she attended Nana Primary school while she had her secondary education at the College of Education Demonstration Secondary School. She earned a degree in law from the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo state in 2005. After graduation, she moved to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where she worked with her family’s law firm called “O.S Megbele & Associates”. While at the Law Firm, she studied French at Alliance Francaise.

Her Rise to Fame

In the course of her profession, she decided to give a try out at the West African Idols competition. Omawumi, with her powerful voice and radiant personality emerged runner-up of the highly competitive show. Not resting on her oars, she launched herself into the Nigerian music industry. Omawumi has shared the stage with P Square, 2face Idibia, D’Banj, Banky W, M.I, Sasha, 9ice, Chaka Demus and Pliers, Carl Thomas, Angie Stone and Donell Jones, Angelique Kidjo, among others.

In 2009, she released a debut studio album “Wonder Woman” via Oma records. The album was massively accepted and critically acclaimed. Same year, she delved into the acting world, first appearing in the 2009 edition of the V-Monolugues, a play that depicts the negative issues affecting women in Nigeria. She also starred in the musical play Olurombi.

She went on to appear in the 2010 Nigerian musical drama Inale and 2011’s Return of Jenifa. She also starred in Yvonne Nelson’s House of Gold in 2013 and Make a move in 2014. Omawumi was one of the lead actors in the movie ‘She Is’ which premiered in March 2019. ‘She Is‘ was produced by Omawumi’s media company; Hermanes Media.

Her second studio album “Lasso of truth” was debuted on the 26th of September 2015. The record garnered acclaim for infusion of a broad range of styles and sounds, incorporating soul, funk, and reggae while lyrically focused on a multitude of social issues. Nigerian singer/songwriter Wizkid was featured on the track “Warn yourself “. The album was reported to be a commercial success.

In 2017, Omawumi returned with her third studio album “Timeless” which was released through Cabal Entertainment, affiliated with Roc Nation Africa. She released another stellar record “In her feelings ” in 2019.

In March 13, 2020, Omawumi released a new single “Without you “.
Omawumi is currently a brand ambassador for Malta Guinness, Konga.com, and Globacom. The singer is also famed for being an active member of the “Rise with the Energy of Africa” campaign.

Her song “Butterflies” won an award at the 2018 Headies. The hit single “In the music ” won an award for the best vocal performance at the Headies 2009.

Omawumi’s Relationship

She got married to her long time boy friend, Toyin Yusuf in January 13, 2018 in Warri, Delta State. Omawumi’s marriage was one of the celebrity marriages that made waves in early 2018. They have two children together and are living happily.
