Biography of Oxlade

Ikuforiji Abdulrahman Laitan popularly known as Oxlade is a Afro-fusion singer and songwriter. He’s one of the new acts in the Nigerian music industry.

With a sweet melodious tune couple with amazing delivery, the 23 year old independent artiste has become a force to reckon with in the Nigerian entertainment industry.

Early life and background of Oxlade

Oxlade was born on the 22nd of April 1997 in Lagos, Nigeria into a polygamous home. Born into a family of academia, one would have thought he’ll follow same path but he instead tread the path of music.

Having lost his mum to the cold hands of death at age 3, Oxlade was brought up by his maternal grandmother. He briefly studied History and International relations at Lagos State University (LASU) before dropping out in his second year to pursue a career in music.

This decision didn’t sit well with his father as he stopped catering for his needs. This was the beginning of a long arduous journey to chasing his dreams. This saw him squatting at his friends’ house and doing menial jobs to fend for himself.

His Rise to Fame

Oxlade has always loved music since he was 10. Like many Nigerian artiste, Oxlade sang in the church choir for a while before becoming the musical director. He was rebuked by his maternal uncles for creating secular songs. This in turn affected his church activities. He almost gave up his music career due to criticisms he received from people.

By providence, Blaqbonez listened to his single “Sour” and planned a collaboration with him. “Mamiwota“, the song which was borne out of that collaboration brought Oxlade to prominence in 2018. Since then, there’s no stopping for the Afro-fusion star. He’s risen to be one of the most exciting new acts. He has also garnered huge fan-base with his sonorous voice and incredible creative range which is often compared with Wande Coal.

He has worked alongside prominent artistes like Fireboy DML, Reekado Banks amongst others. His vocal prowess caught the attention of Davido who wanted to sign him to his record label. The new act turned down the offer while choosing to work with a boutique music company, The Plug, whereas developing at his own pace.

Towards the end of 2018, Oxlade released his first single “Shugar” which was critically acclaimed and gained much popularity. This ascent spurred him to make more releases like Happiness, Ojoro and his most recent EP, Oxygene.

Within a week of release, Oxygene became most-streamed album (within Nigeria) on Apple Music’s charts, surpassing industry heavyweights such as Chike and Fireboy. His single “Away” off the EP is massively airplay at the moment. Oxlade performed alongside Davido in 2018 at the O2 Arena.

Oxlade’s Relationship and Family Life

The fast rising star was involved in a situationship for six months. His ex girlfriend inspired most of his songs on his EP Oxygene.

Awards and Nominations

He was nominated for Rookie of the year at The Headies 2019.

According to online sources, Oxlade is estimated to be worth $50,000 – $100,000.
