Biography of Rema

Divine Ikubor popularly known as Rema is a fast rising Nigerian singer and hip hop rapper. He’s currently signed to Marvin Records. His single “Dumebi” was a breakthrough as it made airwaves and topped several music charts in Africa. The emerging artist rose to prominence with the release of the song “IRON MAN“, which appeared on Barack Obama’s 2019 summer playlist.

Early life and background of Rema

Born and raised in the Edo State capital of Benin City, Rema grew up listening to Afrobeat and commercial rap.The 19 year old artist attained his primary and secondary school education in Benin. In 2013, Rema and his friend Alpha P formed a group called RnA. RnA is a combination of the first letters of their stage names. They participated and won the season 2 of Pikolo’s Dream Alive talent show. They signed a record deal with Peak Entertainment shortly afterwards and released their debut single “Mercy”. The group gained minor exposure following their performance at the Glo Slide and Bounce concert series in Benin and Lagos.

His Rise to Fame

In February 2018, his musical career took an unexpected turn when he uploaded a clip of himself freestyling to an instrumental version of D’Prince’s “Gucci Gang.” This caught the attention of D’Prince who signed him to his record label “Jonzing World” subsidiary of Mavin Records. The young lad has been ripped by many to be the next big thing in the music industry.

When I first heard Rema’s work I knew this was an artist I wanted the entire world to listen to. His talent and artistry are so far beyond his years.”

Rema’s professional singing career commenced when D’Prince then acquainted him with his sibling and CEO of Mavin Records – Don Jazzy. He made his commercial debut in 2019, a year during which he released the four-track EPs Rema, Freestyle, and Bad Commando, and was featured on tracks by D’Prince, Thutmose, and Peter Maxx, as well as Mavins. It peaked at number 1 on Apple Music Nigeria. “Dumebi” a single off the album was critically acclaimed by fans. In 2019, Rema released a hit single “Iron man” which garnered massive airplay worldwide. It was also on Barack & Michelle Obama’s Summer Playlist 2019.

Rema’s Relationship

Rema is still single though he’s being linked to some ladies in the past. In a recent chat with City People, he divulged:

My home is actually my peace, basically, I find my own peace either in church or home. My own personal space, but yeah! It will be nice to find someone I can share it with, but then, I have not found the right one.”

Awards and nominations

On 19 October 2019, Rema won Next Rated and was nominated for Viewer’s Choice at the 13th edition of The Headies. On 12 January 2020, he received the Souncity mvp for best new artist.
