Simi is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and sound engineer. She is one of the talented singers of our time. The petite singer has a subtle voice which captivates the hearts of all. Early life and background of Simi
Born on the 19th of April, 1988 as Simisola Bolatito Ogunleye. The Ondo state indigene is the last born and only girl in a family of six. She was raised in Ojuelegba, a suburb of Surulere, Lagos state, Nigeria. Raised by a single mum, her parents got separated when she was 9. Simi once revealed in an interview that she was a tomboy while growing up. Simi attended Stars International College, a secondary school in Ikorodu, Lagos State. She is an alumnus of Covenant University, where she studied mass communication.
Simi’s Rise to Fame
She wrote her first song at age 10 and began singing in the choir at age 16. Her music career started in 2008 following the release of her debut studio album Ogaju. Some of the hit songs in the album are Iya Temi and Ara Ile.. The album was produced by SamKlef.
Few years later, having changed her genre of music from gospel to secular, she got her major breakthrough in the mainstream music industry in 2014 after she released Tiff under a record label, X3M Music which she was signed to in the same year. The song got two nominations at the Headies 2015. Under X3M Music, Simi released hits including – Tiff, Jamb Question, Love Don’t Care, Smile For Me and also featured in a number of hit records such as ‘Soldier’, with Falz, ‘No Forget’, with Adekunle Gold, ‘Orire’, with Legendury Beatz and a few others.
In 2016, Simi released an E.P with Falz, titled Chemistry and followed it up in September 2017 with her Sophomore album “Simisola” which was a hit, making it at number 5 on the Billboard World Music charts. Clarence Peters and Aje films directed the music videos. She released her 3rd studio album ‘Omo Charlie Champagne’ on the 19th of April 2019 which coincide with her birthday. This album is a break from the norm as it was a fusion of sentimental ballad, Afropop, Afro-fusion, Afro-soul, R&B, EDM and moombahton. The 13-track album features guest vocals from Patoranking, Maleek Berry, Falz, and her husband Adekunle Gold. Its production was primarily handled by Oscar, with additional production from Vtek, Legendury Beatz, and Sess.
Simi dedicated the album to her late father Charles Oladele Ogunleye, who died in 2014. Before the release of the album Omo Charlie Champagne, Vol. 1, she debuted three singles: I Dun Care, Lovin, and Ayo. I Dun Care is a love ballad which received massive airplay and positive reviews. The song condemns the discrimination of love because of tribal and social prejudices.
In May 2019, her contract with X3M music got expired. In June 2019, Simi announced the launch of her independent record label, Studio Brat.
Being a sound engineer, She is credited with mixing and mastering Adekunle Gold’s debut studio album Gold, which was released in July 2016. Her music style is basically hinged in the rhythm and blues, soul and hip-hop music genres.
Simi was endorsed by Etisalat and Opera Mini as the brand ambassador of both companies in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
Simi got married to singer Adekunle Gold in a private wedding ceremony on January 9, 2019. It was later revealed that they had been dating for five years.
