Biography of Tjan

Tijani Olasumbo Fowosere popularly known as Tjan is a versatile Nigerian singer, songwriter and recording artiste. He came to limelight with the release of his 2016 hit single “Aduke” produced by Cobhams Asuquo.

Early life and background of Tjan

Tjan was born in Isale Eko, Lagos State southwest Nigeria on February 21,1992. He was born into a family of four siblings. His father was a poet and his older brother was a rapper. His love for poetry was whetted by his poet father and listening to gospel music icons like Ron Kenoly, Alvin Slaughter, Don Moen to mention a few. Tjan had always wanted to sound different from everyone hence he creating his own style called Soul Afro Pop.

The young budding act started writing music at age 14 while he was still in secondary school. At 17, he had recorded his first song “What you like” but he never had the chance to promote it due to his educational priorities. He underwent music and vocal training at the prestigious Nigerian Muson School of Music before proceeding to North American University Houdegbe, Benin Republic for his university education where he obtained a degree in Mass Communications in 2013. He took part in the Nigerian Idol season 3 and he made it to the top 20 contestant of the competition.

After university and during his national service in Delta State, he competed for and emerged the winner of Airtel Music Competition. This marked his breakthrough into the entertainment world as a professional singer.

His Rise to Fame

In 2014, he signed a record deal with the newly registered, Right Entertainment, under which he released his official professional debut single “I love You so”. Following this, he released other singles in 2015 – “Hey Mama” (dedicated to his mother’s love), “Temi”, “I Love you so (Remix)” (featuring Reminisce), and “Ire”. In 2016, he rose to prominence with his hit single “Aduke” which garnered massive airplay and recognition.

Aduke” was a commercial success so he released another single “Meji” featuring Ycee in late 2016,  the video for Meji was directed by Clarence Peters and has over 1 million views on YouTube. The following year, the soft spoken act released the singles “Your Smile” and “Omoyi”, which made airwaves and in February 2018, he collaborated with afrobeats artiste, Mayorkun on the single “Sotey”.

In 2015, he was nominated for the “Most Promising Act” at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards. His single Love You So (Remix) got nominated for Best Afrobeat Video at the Nigerian Music Video Awards.

Tjan got nominated for the Artiste of the Year at the 2016 Top Naija Music Awards.

Aduke” got nominated for R&B Song of the Year and Best R&B Video at the 2016 Headies and Nigerian Music Video Awards.

Aduke” clinched the award for Love Song of the Year at 2017 COSON Song Awards.
