Borussia Dortmund will host Werder Bremen in the third round of the DFB-Pokal in their quest for a fairytale finish, one which could see them win only their second ever domestic double in their club history.
The table-toppers though good performers this term have felt lucky atimes with closest contenders Bayern Munich unable to punish their slip-ups. Case in point – Dortmund fell to a 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt after Luka Jokic cancelled a goal scored earlier on by Mario Gotze.
However, they still kept pole position with Bayern Munich losing 3-1 to Bayer Leverkusen.
That said, Borussia Dortmund come into the game as favourites based on current form and should run out somewhat easy winners over Werder Bremen.
Indeed, they are unbeaten in their last four games and have lost only two games in all competitions, one to Atletico Madrid and Fortuna Dusseldorf.
Werder Bremen are no strangers to this competition after lifting the DFB Pokal trophy five times with their last coming in 2019. On the other hand, their opponents, Dortmund lifted the trophy last in 2017 and still have fresh memories of what it means to be a winner of the DFB Pokal.
Although Bremen last won this fixture in 2017 when Selassie and Eggstein ensured that they got the better of their opponents, they will like to have a repeat of that win with the two goalscorers still present in their team.
Bremen are 10th in the league standings and will pay no respect to the league leaders as they will be looking to get a comfortable win.
