Buhari Congratulates Rev Ayokunle On Re-Election As CAN President

  • Ayokunle beat Ahima to the top post.
  • Buhari promises that is administration will continue to strengthen the cordial relationship that has existed.

President Muhammadu Buhari has felicitated with Rev. Dr. Samson Olasupo Ayokunle on his re-election as President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

It could be recalled that over 149 notable Nigerians, representing over 80 million Christian churches across the country,  went out to vote for the next CAN President.

The battle for the office was between Ayokunle, who of the Nigeria Baptist Convention, and Caleb Ahima, the President of TEKAN/ECWA, Fellowship of Churches of Christ in Nigeria.

With his victory, he will head CAN for another three years.

Ayokunle got the top seat three years ago succeeding Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, polling 54 votes to defeat Prof. Joseph Otubu of the Motailatu Church Cherubim and Seraphim Movement who represented the Organisation of African Instituted Churches (OAIC) with 28 votes.

Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, in a statement said that President Buhari congratulated church leaders and Christendom in general for the successful election.

The president, therefore, assured President of CAN that his administration will continue to strengthen the cordial relationship that has existed, especially in tackling the challenges facing Nigeria.

“Recalling his meetings with Rev. Ayokunle, who is also the President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, the President believed the cleric’s maturity, humility and wise counsels to governments will go a long way in healing and putting the country on the right track for development.

“President Buhari prayed that the Almighty God will grant the leadership of CAN more wisdom and strength in running the affairs of the association”
