Buhari Wants Tanko Mohammad to Be CJN, Writes Senate

  • Buhari had earlier appointed Justice Mohammed as acting CJN.
  • He also writes the Senate seeking approval for the appointment of 15 special advisers.

After the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC), President Muhammadu Buhari has forwarded the name of the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad to the Senate for approval as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria.

Mohammed has been acting the role in acting capacity which would elapse July 25.

The Presidents made his request in a letter sent to the upper chamber of the national assembly today. The president also sent another letter seeking the approval for the appointment of 15 special advisers.

The National Judicial Council (NJC) from their Emergency Meeting which they recommended Justice Muhammad, also recommended eight other persons as Heads of Court.

The decision was reached following a meeting initially presided over by Justice Umaru Abdullahi.

The NJC said it considered and approved the recommendation of its Interview Committee that screened the two candidates presented by the Federal Judicial Service Commission to it for appointment as Chief Justice of Nigeria.

After the approval of the president and their respective State Governors and confirmation by the Senate and State Houses of Assembly as the case may be, the newly appointed Heads of Court will be sworn-in.

With the processes done, the recommended names are expected to be approved.
