Coronavirus: Mikel Obi Calls For Immediate End To Season

Nigerian midfielder,  Mikel Obi who currently plays for Turkish outfit, Trabzonspor calls on governing authorities to void the season.

The former Nigerian International asks that the Turkish League follow the lead of other nations.

The former Chelsea star suggests he isn’t comfortable playing football amidst all of the ongoing Coronavirus crisis. Hence, his call to cancel the remainder of the campaign.

Leading leagues across Europe have already shut down amidst the ravaging Coronavirus crisis.

Leagues like the Premier League, Laliga, Serie A, Ligue 1, Bundesliga and MLS have all come to a conclusion to suspend their games for the foreseeable future.

For the Turkish Super Lig however, it’s been business as usual. The games this weekend are still poised to go on as usual with Trabzonspor set to take on fellow title hopefuls, Istanbul Basaksehir on Sunday.

Indeed, there are no rolling plans to suspend games in the region, and unlike some other leagues where matches are played behind closed doors, the doors are still left wide open for fans from far and near to attend.

Mikel reveals he feels a bit uncomfortable playing against his will, as he calls for the season to be brought to a close.

He made this known through social media space, Instagram where he posted:

“There is more to life than football.

“I do not feel comfortable and don’t want to play football in this situation.

“Everyone should be home with their families and loved ones in this critical time.

“Season should be cancelled as the world is facing such turbulent times.”

His message felt like music to the ears of his professional mates and fans alike. Former Atletico Madrid striker, Radamel Falcao who now features for Istanbul-based giants, Galatasaray shared same thoughts with Mikel Obi, responding to the superstar’s message with:

“You are right John. Life is more important than football.”
