COVID-19 Nigeria Update Today

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Nigeria has risen to 5621 cases after the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced an additional 176 new cases today.

From the 175 cases, 95 were recorded in Lagos; the epicentre of the dreaded virus, 31 in Oyo, 11 in FCT, 8 in Niger and Borno, 6 in Jigawa, 4 in Kaduna,  3 in Anambra, two each in Edo, Rivers, Nasarawa and Bauchi while Benue and Zamfara have one case each.

Out of the 5621 total confirmed cases, 1472 have been discharged with 176 deaths recorded.

Two COVID-19 patients discharged in Bayelsa

Bayelsa state government has discharged two coronavirus patients after testing negative twice for the virus.

According to a statement signed by the Deputy Chairman of the state’s COVID-19 Taskforce and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr Inodu Apoku, the two patients were in the isolation centre at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital at Okolobiri. They were linked to the index case that was discharged about a week ago.

“These patients have also met all other NCDC guidelines for discharge. Consequently, they have been discharged today (Saturday).

“So there is only one active COVID-19 case in the state after discharging the index case and the other four linked cases,” Apoku said.

Lagos records another COVID-19 death

Lagos State has recorded an additional death of three COVID-19 patients.

According to the announcement made by the NCDC on Saturday, this brings the number of casualty in COVID-19 cases in the state to 36.

In the last 24-hours, NCDC recorded four deaths from COVID-19 complications, with three from Lagos and one fro Gombe.

Three doctors, five nurses in Lagos hospital test COVID-19 positive

It has been confirmed that three doctors and five nurses, working in Mushin General Hospital, Lagos State, have tested positive to COVID-19, leading to panic among the workers.

An official of the hospital told Punch on condition of anonymity that a health worker had fallen sick about two weeks ago and was being treated for malaria when a nurse suspected that they were handling a coronavirus case.

It was gathered that some personnel of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control took the samples of the sick worker and the two officials (the nurse and a doctor) who attended to her and that of the doctor came back positive while that of the nurse was negative.

COVID-19 patient delivers baby boy in Lagos

Lagos Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has confirmed that a pregnant COVID-19 patient delivered a baby boy at the Gbagada Isolation Centre. Both mother and child are doing well.

He also disclosed that 67  patients which include 22 females and 45 males including 3 foreign nationals – 2 Indians and a Chinese were discharged to join the society after recovering from the dreaded virus fully.

“The patients; 24 from the Mainland Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba, 22 from Onikan, 11 from Agidingbi, 2 from Lekki and 8 from Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Isolation Centres were discharged after testing negative to #COVID19 in two consecutive readings.

“As our front line health workers record successes in the battle against #COVID19, we urge citizens to adhere strictly to public health directives as this is the only way we can break the chain of transmission of the infection,” he added.
