COVID-19 Nigeria Update Today

Nigeria has recorded the highest single cases of COVID-19 with 745 cases announced by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

From the new cases, Lagos, the epicenter recorded 280 cases, Oyo-103, Ebonyi-72, FCT-60, Imo-46, Edo-34, Delta-33, Rivers-25, Kaduna-23, Ondo-16, Katsina-12, Kano-10, Bauchi-8, Borno-7, Kwara-5, Gombe-4, Sokoto-2, Enugu-2, Yobe-1, Osun and Nasarawa recorded one case each.

Nigeria has also crossed the 18000-mark with total cases now 18,480. 6,307 patients have been discharged while 475 deaths have been recorded as well.

Rain may boost the spread of infection

The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 has advised Nigerians to obey its guidelines on coronavirus to avoid a resurgence of the virus during the rainy season.

The advice was given by the PTF Chairman and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha on Thursday during the task force press briefing in Abuja.

Mustapha who also listed the group’s achievements since its inauguration by President Muhammadu Buhari three months ago, listed steps taken by the Federal Government through the PTF to check the spread of COVID-19 since the task force inauguration.

The measures include the lockdown of Lagos and Ogun states as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT); ban on flights, ban on interstate travels and domestic flights, closure of schools and religious centres and imposition of a nationwide curfew.

He also noted that the Federal Government had increased COVID-19 laboratories from two to 38, trained 13,000 health workers, and developed policy and protocols for testing returning Nigerians.

He further listed the challenges to COVID-19 fight as resistance to change, stigmatization, mental health, culture, religious belief, and rising incidents of domestic violence.

Minister tells COVID-19 positive Nigerians with underlying health issues not to stay at home

The Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, has urged those above 50 years or had pre-existing ailments like diabetes, cancer, hypertension, kidney disease, and HIV not to stay at home for treatment.

While noting that the majority of 469 people that had died of COVID-19 as of Wednesday were in that category, the minister,  urged people in those categories to stay at home or wear face masks whenever they are going out.

The minister also said going to crowded places such as markets and worship centers could expose one to the virus.
