Buhari Suspends Onnoghen As CJN

President Muhammadu Buhari has suspended the Chief Justice of the Federation (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen.

In his place, he has sworn in Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed in an acting capacity. He performed the ceremony at the presidential villa, Abuja on Friday.

Buhari said the suspension followed an order from the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) dated January 23, 2019.

He said since the issue broke, judges had acted with alacrity towards the suspended CJN.

Buhari also expressed dismay at the rate the Supreme Court under Onnoghen set free people accused of corruption.


SDP Presidential Ticket: Gana Rejects Appeal Court Judgement

The crisis rocking the Social Democratic Party over its Presidential Candidate in the forthcoming election took a new dimension on Friday as Prof Jerry Gana rejected Thursday’s Appeal Court judgement which affirmed former governor of Cross River State, Mr Donald Duke, as the presidential candidate of the Party

In a statement released ‎in Abuja yesterday, the Director General, G19 Presidential Campaign Team of Prof. Gana, Dr Ike Neliaku ‎declared that the judgement was characterised with flaw And irregularities which was strange in a democratic setup.


Onnoghen’s Suspension As CJN, Dictatorship Taken Too Far ― Atiku

The presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has described the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria by President Muhammadu Buhari, as “an anti-democratic act”.

He said he rejected the actions of President Buhari in its entirety, while he called on Justice Onnoghen and the judiciary to resist it “with every legal and constitutional means that they can muster.”

Atiku made his position known Friday evening, in a statement personally signed by him.


Court Affirms INEC’s Rejection Of Zamfara APC Candidates

A Federal High Court in Abuja, on Friday, affirmed the decision of the Independent Nation Electoral Commission (INEC) debarring the All Progressives Congress (APC) from fielding candidates in the forthcoming general elections in Zamfara State.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu in a judgment she delivered in a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1279/2018, filed in the name of APC by some individuals, who said they emerged from a consensus arrangement adopted by the party in Zamfara state, held that INEC was right to have delisted names of candidates APC presented for the forthcoming elections.

She said INEC’s decision was in tandem with the law guiding parties’ primaries and added that the electoral body acted within its powers by refusing to accept the list of candidates from APC.


Ekiti State Government Distributes 3,000 JAMB Forms To Students

The Ekiti state government has distributed free Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) forms to 3,000 qualified but vulnerable students and out of school youths across the 16 local government areas of the state.

The wife of Ekiti state governor, Mrs Bisi Fayemi, made this known during the flag-off of distribution of the forms to the beneficiaries on Friday in Ado-Ekiti.

She said the present administration would continue to prioritise the education of Ekiti youths for national development.


Forgery: Court Remands Woman In Prison, Grants 3 Persons Bail

FCT High Court, Kubwa, on Thursday ordered the remand of one Victoria Adelana in prison and granted three other people bail, docked over alleged forgery and obtaining N14 million under false pretence.

The defendants: Victoria Adelana, Adewole Olugbenga, Patrick Ojo and Ezechi Benedeth, were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a 24 count charge bordering on conspiracy and forgery.

Justice Kezziah Ogbonnaya ordered Adelana’s remand after the EFCC prosecutor, Dianne Nkwap, opposed her bail, because there are issues contained in the bail application she had to respond to.


Mechanic, 45, Docked Over Illegal Marriage With House Wife

A 45-year-old auto mechanic, Olakunle Oladejo, on Friday appeared before an Okitipupa Chief Magistrates’ Court, Ondo State, over alleged illegal marriage with Dupe Moroke.

The defendant of no fixed address is standing trial in the court on the one-count charge of illegal marriage.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Ayodeji Omoyeigha told the court that the defendant and two others now at large, on Oct. 10, 2018, around 12:00 p,m. at a marriage registry in Okitipupa, unlawfully did illegal marriage with Moroke without the consent of the court.


No Time Yet To Implement Our Promise On Power Devolution, APC Tells Nigerians

The ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC) has said it has not abandoned its promise to initiate action for amendment of the constitution towards ensuring devolution of power to states and local government in the country.

National publicity secretary of the party, Mallam Lanre Isa Onilu made the declaration on Friday at a press conference in Abuja. Onilu, however, told Nigerians to exercise patience as there was no time yet to embark on the much clamoured devolution of power otherwise called restructuring of the party in certain quarters.


CJN’s Suspension: Nigeria Under Dictatorship ― Olawepo-Hashim

Presidential candidate of Peoples Trust (PT) in the February 16, 2019 election, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has called for international sanctions against officials of the executive arm of the Federal Government of Nigeria, declaring that the suspension of the Chief Justice of the Federation (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, by President Muhammadu Buhari was a decent to full-blown dictatorship.

The Presidential hopeful in a statement on Friday, said that the development was an aberration to the laws of Nigeria and an indication that the country had again fallen into dictatorship.


Buhari Cannot Unilaterally Suspend Onnoghen ― Ubani

The second Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Barrister Monday Ubani has said that the President cannot unilaterally suspend the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.

Ubani who spoke on the issue maintained that Onnoghen’s suspension is strange, while calling on President Buhari to give more clarity.
