Double Gs Gimenez And Godin Tipped Over A Horrible Juventus To Give Atletico Madrid A Fine Win.

Two goals from Raul Jimenez and Diego Godin proved enough for an impeccable Atletico Madrid to get the win against Italian giants, Juventus in the first leg encounter of their UCL tie at the Wanda Metropolitano.

This was the first round in the Tournament’s history where VAR was used and the crowd were buzzing and cheering away for all ninety minutes.

Diego Costa made the first talking point of the game when he received a booking for refusing to retreat from a Juventus free-kick, meaning that he won’t be available for the second leg.

Cristiano Ronaldo almost got the goal soon after in the 30th-minute from a 30-yard freekick but the ball was tipped over by a fine save from Jan Oblak.

The Spanish side must have thought they had a penalty in the 28th-minute when Mattia Di Sciglio made a bad tackle on Costa with the referee pointing to the spot. However, the penalty appeal was ruled out after VAR review by the referee.

Costa was once again should have opened the scoring four minutes into the second half after Griezmann released the Spaniard with an inch-perfect pass but the former’s shot just went wide.

Moments later, Szczesny made a super save from a lob by Antoinne Griezmann with the rebound by Diego Costa coming off the bar before Morata was brought on for the latter.

One of the biggest talking points in the game was when Morata’s goal was cancelled after a VAR review. That definitely didn’t go down well with the home crowd.

With both sides maintaining great defensive discipline, the game did look like it was headed for a draw not until Gimenez pounced on a goal scramble in the 78th minute to send the home side ahead after a VAR check gave the nod.

Godin soon settled matters for the home side after a Ronaldo deflection as Juventus failed to clear a freekick.

Atletico Madrid 2-0 Juventus it ended.
