Senate confirms Emefiele’s appointment after grilling.
The Igbo Youth Assembly has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for re-appointing Godwin Emeifele as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Ifeanyi Nwaudunna, the president of the group in a statement on Thursday in Abuja, said the gesture had shown Buhari’s love for and commitment to the unity of Nigeria.
He, therefore, appealed to the president to ensure fairness and equity in the appointment of government officials in his second term in order to promote national unity.
“We pray that you use your office to consider the people of Igbo extraction for more important positions in this next administration, as a major ethnic group in Nigeria and a key player in the development of Nigeria.
“The apex Igbo Youths organisation, an advocate of national unity and peace of Nigeria, thank the President for re-appointing Mr Godwin Ifeanyichukwu Emeifele as the Governor of CBN for the second term.
“This kind gesture shows your love and commitment for the unity of Nigeria. We appeal to you to use your exalted office as our President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces to promote national unity to ensure fairness and equity in the appointment of government officials for the next level government,” he said.
In a related development, the Senate also yesterday confirmed Emefiele’s appointment for a second term as CBN governor after being grilled on the way forward concerning the Nigerian economy by the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions,.
The screening exercise was as a result of the mandate given by Senate President Bukola Saraki, to the committee at the plenary on Tuesday.
Emefiele, who was appointed as CBN Governor on June 2, 2014, is due to end his first term on June 2, this year.
President Muhammadu Buhari had last week written to the Senate requesting that Emefiele be confirmed as CBN Governor for a second term of five years.
The confirmation followed the adoption of the report by the committee on the nominee.
In its report, the committee recommended that: “the nominee understands the diverse economy of the country and has displayed profound knowledge of the continuous existence of our economic stability.
“That the nominee has performed credibly in his first tenure which resulted to the exit of the nation out of economic recession.”
