Federal Government Declares May 1st As Workers Day

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared tomorrow Wednesday, May 1, as public holiday to celebrate this year’s Workers Day.

The Workers day or Labor day or May day is an event celebrated worldwide, especially on the first day of May, by all workers of Labour.
The Celebration is to commemorate the memory of the struggle of all workers in the past had gone through for better conditions and benefits enjoyed today.

In Nigeria, it was first declared in 1980 by the People Redemption Party, PRP, Government of Kano State. And it became a national holiday on May 1, 1981.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd), who declared this on behalf of the Federal Government in Abuja.
This was announced yesterday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Mrs. Georgina Ehuriah on behalf of the Minister.

He congratulated all workers in Nigerian for their efforts and commitment towards building a better Nigeria, stating that the break was well deserved.

Lt Gen Dambazau commended the efforts of all employees of labour in ensuring that all the policies and programs of the Buhari led government were made possible as a result of their effective and efficient service delivery to all and sundry.

The Minister further called for continuous support from all Nigerian workers in ensuring that the efforts of the government, especially at re-positioning and moving the economy of Nigeria to the Next Level, was made possible.

He also commended the workers for keeping faith with President Muhammadu Buhari and his administration’s decision to build a better Nigeria.

He affirmed that the government will not renege on this promise, and will continue to do all that it can to make this possible.
