It is no doubt a lot of prospective university students aspire to attend a federal university Nigeria. There are a lot of reasons any Nigerian student will love to study in a federal university. First, the institutions are a lot cheaper than other types of universities. Also, they are usually more equipped in terms of facilities as well as structures.

Although there are about 40 federal universities in Nigeria. But only a few of them are specialised. Such as federal universities of agriculture and universities of technology. As the rest are conventional federal universities.

So below is a list of all federal universities in Nigeria, both conventional and specialised.

  1. Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi

Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi was established in the year 1980. Although the school was first named Federal University of Technology, Bauchi. However in 1984, the institution was merged with Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Then it was renamed Abubakar Tafawa Balewa College, Ahmadu Bello University (ATBC-ABU). Finally, in 1988, it was demerged from the latter institution and then named Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University. However, it is now popularly referred to as ATBU.

The institution has over 15,000 students comprising of both undergraduates and post graduate students.

Usually, the school fees for fresh students is over N22, 000. While that for returning students is over N14, 000.

  1. Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State.

Popularly known as Abu Zaria, this is one of the most prestigious universities in Nigeria. And it was established in the year 1962. Also, some of the popular ABU ex-students include Atiku Abubakar, Umaru Musa Yaradua, Dino Melaye, Attahiru Jega and Nuhu Ribadu. Ahmadu Bello University ABU Cut off Marks / Admission Requirements

Importantly, candidates willing to be admitted into ABU must have scored at least 180 at the UTME exam. Also, such candidates must have chosen ABU as their first choice institution.

In addition, such candidate is required to pay a sum of N2, 000 for the institution’s screening exercise. However, this can only be done by visiting the admission screening portal at putme.abu.edu.ng.  And generating a payment slip. So candidates can then pay online or at a local bank.

Usually, the School fees for ABU Zaria is N23, 000 for undergraduate full time students and N41, 000 for diploma students

  1. Bayero University Kano, Kano State.

Bayero University, Kano is popularly known and referred to as BUK and was founded in the year 1977. Also, one of the most popular ex-students of the institution is General Murtala Muhammed. In addition, the famous Nelson Mandela holds an honorary degree from this university.

Bayero University Kano Admission requirements- Cut Off Marks

In addition to having at least five Level credits including English and Mathematics. Also, candidates must pass the UTME cut off mark for the university. However, this is usually decided by the University every year. For the year 2018/2019 academi9c session, the UTME cut off mark was 180. However a few faculties demanded a higher score above 180 and this includes;

First, the Faculty of Allied and Health Sciences. As well as Faculty of Law: 200 and above

Then, the Clinical Sciences, dentistry. As well as Pharmaceutical sciences took only 220 and above.

Finally for all blind and deaf candidates, the UTME cut off mark was at least 150.

However, candidates should note that scoring the UTME cut off mark does not qualify them for admission into Bayero University, Kano. But only make them eligible to participate in the university’s post UTME screening exercise.

Usually, the School fees for Bayero University BUK is over N30, 000. Prospective candidates should also be prepared to pay a certain sum that will be by the university declared as acceptance fee.

  1. University of Benin, Edo State.

Popularly referred to as UNIBEN, this institution is one of the best universities in the country. First, the University of Benin was established in the year 1970. Furthermore, it was then known as the Institute of Technology.  Then by 1971, it became a university by quality of the Nigeria University Commission NUC declaration.

The University of Benin has two campuses. As one is located at Ugbowo ( which is the main campus). While the other is located at Ekenwan.

This prestigious academic institution has ranked very high amongst universities both nationally and internationally and is considered one of the first generation universities in Nigeria.

University of Benin UNIBEN School fees

The school fees for University of Benin UNIBEN as with many other federal universities is relatively cheap. For new students who has just been offered admission, an acceptance fee of about N49,000 is required. As well as a school fee of about the same amount.

However, from the second year upwards, school fees will reduce to about N14,400.

University of Benin UNIBEN Cut off marks

The aggregate cut off mark for the University of Benin for UTME candidates is at least 200. So this means that candidates how score 200 and above are eligible for the post UTME screening exercise. However this was the cut off mark for 2018/2019 session. Therefore take note that this may increase and aim for a higher score. Also, be aware that this will only qualify you fir UNIBEN post UTME screening and not direct admission.

Also, importantly, only candidates who chose University if Benin as their first choice institution are eligible for the post UTME screening exercise.
