Fire Guts Borno IDPs Camp, Destroys 140 Shelters, 371 Displaced

  • NEMA collaborating with the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) had scaled up activities to support the victims.
  • A similar incident occurred in Monguno IDPs camp in February 2019.

140 shelters have been destroyed by fire in two Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps at Monguno Local Government Area of Borno.

This was revealed by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Northeast Information Officer, Abdulkadir Ibrahim, in a statement on Sunday in Maiduguri.

Ibrahim who said the fire incidents were recorded at Flatari and Nguro camps in Monguno on Saturday disclosed that 28 shelters were destroyed at Flatari camp, affecting 20 households while 120 shelters were razed and 77 households displaced at Nguro in the fire disaster.

The NEMA official added that about 371 persons were displaced in the fire outbreaks recorded in the two camps.

According to him, the agency is conducting an investigation to know the cause of the fire and identify the needs of the victims in providing shelter and food for the IDPs.

He also revealed that the agency in collaboration with the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) had scaled up activities to support the victims.

Recurring fire incidents in IDPs camps

iDONSABI gathered that some of the IDPs in the northeast state camp are from Kukawa, Kauwa, Doro Baga, Kekeno and Bunduram Communities in Baga Local Government Area of the state.

The last time casualties were recorded as a result of a similar event was in February at the same camp, when three persons were confirmed dead in a fire disaster at an IDPs camp in Monguno, Borno State, leaving 7,839 persons were affected by the disaster.

The Monguno IDPs’ camp is about 137 kilometres away from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state.
