Ghana To Allegedly Sue Black Panther Movie Producers For Using Kente

Ghana have indicated that they will be suing the producers of Black Panther, A black American superhero film over alleged patent and copyright breaches.

The movie was produced by Marvel Studios in 2018. Black Panther was popular and highly watched grossing $1.344 billion dollars.

Meanwhile, Ghana has a problem with them using Kente, the country’s famous and celebrated traditional in some of the scenes without permission.

According to Ghana National Folklore Board, Marvel Studios was supposed to seek permission from the country under copyrights law.

However, a representative of the board, Mrs Adobea revealed they are yet to officially write Marvel Studios over the issue.

We are preparing a legal dossier. The strategy is that we are not going in for a fight. It is not adversarial.” She said.

The Board plans to “sit down with Marvel Studios, negotiate as to how they can compensate Ghana because they were to come for permission but they did not”

However the board said that permission is not required if it was for personal use or used in customary context.
