A report yesterday had made it known that Ekiti State Government led by Dr. Kayode Fayemi is set to construct an airport in the state.

However, the construction of the airport has been put to question as to whether it was necessary since there are some airports in the South West where Ekiti is that is under utilized.

Ogundamisi in his statement stated that airports in Nigeria are not sustainable as he called on Governors in the southwest to focus on road networks that will link the states in the zone.

He said, “Ekiti Airport? Needless. Even Akure Airport needs to be shut down, a lot of airports across Nigeria are vanity projects. We either close Ibadan and leave Akure or close Akure and leave Ibadan. Not sustainable. Focus on South West road networks to link Oodua States.”

However, in a response to the closure of Akure Airport, Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu stressed that it will be an unwise move to shutdown the state airport.
He hinted the airport has resulted in a new terminal and creation of jobs.
Akeredolu said, “It would be most unwise to shutdown the Akure Airport. In 2018 it was the second fastest growing airport by passenger traffic according to FAAN
(136% growth). We have seen how that has resulted in a new terminal and Jobs at the airport. Do not kill progress.”
