History of Ondo State Nigeria

Ondo state is one of the 36 states of Nigeria. It is situated in the south western part of the country with its capital at Akure. Ondo state is made up of eighteen (18) local government areas and it is surrounded by Edo state (East), Ekiti state (North), Kogi state (North-east), Delta state (South-east), Ogun state (south-west) and Osun state (North-west).

History of Ondo State

Ondo state was one of the three states carved out of the Old Western state of Nigeria on the 1st of April 1976 during states creation which originally included Ekiti state but was later split off in 1996. It covered the total area of the old Ondo province that was created in 1915 with Akure as its provincial headquarters.

Ethnic Groups in Ondo State

Ondo state is a homogenous state because it is highly occupied by the Yoruba ethnic group such as the Ilajes, the Akokos, the Ondos, the Ikales and the Owos with minorities such as the Ijaws and Apois.

Population of Ondo State 2019/2020

According to the 2006 national censors, Ondo state has a total number of 3,460,877 people living in it including 1,745,057 males and 1,715,820 females with an Area size of 15,500 km2 (6,000 sq mi).

Ondo State Economy

The economy of Ondo state which is the sixth largest economy in Nigeria is dominated by crop production and crude oil. Ondo state has a number of investment opportunities across different sectors such as: Agribusiness, Light Manufacturing, Healthcare, Tourism, Energy and Mining. There are also several tertiary institutions situated across the state which forms part of the economy. Government of Ondo State

Ondo state has three Arms of Government:

  • The Executive Arm
  • The Legislative Arm
  • The Judicial Arm

The Executive Arm of Ondo State

This Arm is headed by the State governor assisted by the commissioners who the governor appoints to head different departments of the State. Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu is the present governor of Ondo State with Agboola Ajayi as the deputy governor.

The Legislative Arm of Ondo State

This is the State house of Assembly in Ondo State. It is made up of 26 members voted by the electorates of the 26 constituencies in the State. Bamidele Oloyelogun is the present speaker of the State Assembly.

The Judicial Arm of Ondo State

This Arm of the State is headed by the chief judge of the State to ensure justice in all areas.  Justice Oluwatoyin Akeredolu is the present chief Judge of the State.
