History of Taraba State Nigeria

Taraba state is found in the north-east zone of Nigeria, its capital is Jalingo.  The state has sixteen (16) Local Government Areas which are governed by elected chairmen. Rivers Benue, Donga, Taraba and ibise are the major rivers in the state that rises from the Cameroonian mountains and straining almost the entire length of the state.

History of Taraba State

Taraba State was formed on 27th August 1991 by General Ibrahim Babangida (Military region ) it was among the former 1976 region of Mun, Mambilla and Wukan and was carved out of the famer Gongola State. The state was named after Taraba river which traverses the southern area of Taraba state. Taraba state is referred to as “Natures gift to the nation “.

It has boundaries with Bauchi and Gombe state (North), plateau and Nassarawa state (West) Adamawa state (East) and Cameroon (South).

Ethnic Groups in Taraba state

Taraba state is rich in culture and heritage, the major language spoken by the people is Hausa language. Taraba State has many Tribes, with the Munuye Tribe coming out as the highest number, others include Jenjo, Jibawa, Kuteb  Chamba, Yandang, Munuye ,Mambila, Wurkums, Fulanis, Jukun, Ichen, Tiv, Kaka and Ndola.

According to the 2006 national censors, Taraba state has about 2,294,800 people living in it with an Area of 54,473 km (3rd Biggest State by Area)

Economy of Taraba State

Taraba state is mostly into agriculture, rearing of livestock, fishing and poultry. Agricultural produce includes cash crops-coffee tea, groundnuts and cotton. Crops such as maize, rice, sorghum, millet, cassava and yam are produced in commercial quantity. Economy activities such as poultry, cotton-weaving, dyeing, mat-making, carving, embroidery and black’s military are carried out in the state. People that live in a community on the banks of river Benue, River Taraba, river Donga and Ibi engage in fishing all year round. Rearing of cattle, sheep and goats in large quantity especially on the Mambilla plateau, along benue and Tabra valley. These are also rearing of livestock such as poultry production, rabbit breeding and pig farming in large scale.

 The Government in Taraba state

Taraba State government is divided into three arms, namely;

The Executive Arm
This arm is headed by the elected governor of the State, assisted by those he appoints to work with Him in the State government.  The current Governor of Taraba State is DARIUS ISHAKU

The Legislative Arm

They convene at Taraba State House Assembly in Jalingo. This comprises of 24 members elected by the people of the 24 constituencies of Taraba State. PETER ABEL DIAH is the speaker of the Taraba State Assembly.

The Judicial Arm

This is headed by the chief judge of the State; Justice JUSTINE TUKUR is the current judge of Taraba State
