How To Cook Ewa Agoyin Like that Mama

Ewa Agoyin is a local delicacy popular among Lagos people. You are likely to find this dish sold on the streets more than you will find it in homes.

“Ewa” means Beans in Yoruba language while “Agoyin” is a term used to describe settlers from neighbouring countries like Benin republic and Togo, who came into Nigeria many years ago.

The trademark of Ewa Agoyin is the sight of women hawking on the streets with local iron pots on their heads.

They beauty of this dish is the sauce which is so appealing, such that even those who don’t naturally like beans have become hooked to it.

Ewa Agoyin is simply made by mashing beans and served with palm oil based pepper sauce.

Ingredients for Ewa Agoyin

Black eyed beans

Small Dry chilli pepper (Shombo)

Palm oil

Ginger (just a little)

Onion

Cray Fish

Seasoning Cubes

Salt to taste

Directions for Making Ewa Agoyin

Clean the beans and cook till it gets very tender. Once it’s soft, mash it up with a potato masher or wooden spoon.

Soak the dry pepper for few hours, preferably overnight and blend, adding a little ginger. Then slice the onion separately or blend with the pepper and ginger.

You can now heat up the palm oil till very hot, you do not necessarily have to bleach. Then add the onions, allowing to fry till it gets dark and burns a just a little.

Pour your pepper blend into the oil; leaving it to fry till the oil separates from the ground pepper and it has a sandy grainy look. It’s now time to add the seasoning cubes, Crayfish and Salt.

Leave it to cook for about 10 minutes, till the colour of the Pepper changes from bright red to a darker shade.
