How To Make the Best Nigerian Chin Chin

Chin Chin is a Nigerian snack made by frying a mix of flour, butter, milk and sugar. It is a very convenient snack to serve house guests or at parties. One great advantage Chin Chin has over other snacks is that it can last for weeks if stored well in an airtight container.

With no baking involved in this recipe, Chin Chin is one of the easiest Nigerian snacks to make.

To make Chin Chin, you will need the following ingredients.

Ingredients for Chin Chin

1kg plain flour (all purpose flour)

150ml evaporated milk / 150g powdered milk

275g granulated sugar

250g margarine

2 medium nutmegs | 2 teaspoons ground nutmeg

Vegetable oil

Directions for Making Chin Chin

Mix the milk and sugar in a bowl and set aside. If you are using powdered milk, mix the milk and sugar. Then add 150 ml of water.

One way to get the sugar to dissolve fast is to grind it in a dry mill before mixing it with other ingredients.

In a separate bowl, mix the ground nutmeg and flour, then rub the margarine into the flour till it has mixed well with the flour.

Add the sugar and milk mixture to the margarine/flour mixture and mix till you get a smooth dough mix. Place the dough on a flat surface and carefully knead with a dough roller.

When the dough is flat enough, cut into tiny sizes. If you are making a large quantity, sprinkle bits of flour on the cut pieces, so that they do not stick together.

Deep-fry in hot vegetable oil and continuously stir the chin chin till you get a golden brown colour. Scoop out onto a flat tray to dry and allow to cool. Be sure to package the chin chin once it’s cool to avoid getting stale.

The best way to preserve chin chin is by storing in a dry, airtight container.
