Ighalo Shows Signs Of Promise In United’s Trashing Of Chelsea

Odion Ighalo made his debut for Manchester United in their Stamford Bridge affair on Monday night. The Nigerian striker managed as many shots on target (1) as Chelsea had managed all night having being introduced only at the 91st minute.

Manchester United seem to have mastered the art of defeating Chelsea, an act they’ve executed three times this season already.

Frank Lampard was looking distraught and out of sorts for the most parts of the game as he couldn’t decipher what to make of his attackers. Batshuayi was particularly wasteful in front of goal and justified the English boss’s decision to go with Tammy Abraham as his first choice striker all season.

Batman as he is fondly called had several chances thrown away. Two disallowed goals following VAR reviews didn’t help matters either.

Martial scored the first goal for United following a cross from Aaron Wan Bissaka. The right-back who has been absolutely woeful in attack cut Willian twice to make a cross to Martial who sent himself diving into the ball.

Harry Maguire then scored the second following a corner kick with Fred shielding him from Chelsea defenders who were looking to man mark him.

After a goal from substitute Olivier Giroud was disallowed after the French striker was adjudged to be offside, it looked like an ended affair for Chelsea.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer then gave Ighalo his debut. The Shanghai Shehua striker who is on loan at United showed signs of promise with a particularly interesting first touch which was undoubtedly better than what Lukaku showed in a United shirt.

In fact, Ighalo came close to scoring after latching onto a through pass sent his way, with the pass dissecting through the Blues defence. However, what would have been an incredible debut game with a goal was thwarted by Caballero who made a last ditch save with his legs to deny the former Watford striker.

With that win, United are now seventh place on the Premier League standings, only three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.
