INEC: Kogi West Reelection May Holds November 16

  • INEC official says Kogi West Senatorial election may hold the same day with the governorship.
  • Court orders INEC to organise reelection within the time frame of the law.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said the reelection ordered by the appeal court for Kogi West senatorial district may take place the same day with the governorship election billed for November 16.

This was hinted by INEC national commissioner in charge of Kogi, Niger and Kwara, Muhammed Haruna on Friday in Lokoja, the state capital at a workshop organised for journalists by the International Foundation for Electoral System.

iDONSABI reports that the Court of Appeal in Abuja on Friday reaffirmed the tribunal ruling that quashed the victory of Senator Dino Melaye as a senator for Kogi West.

Justice Yahaya Dantijo, who led a three-member panel of the court, in a unanimous decision nullified Melaye’s victory and ordered for reelection.

In his ruling, Justice Dantijo asked INEC, to withdraw the certificate of return given to Melaye and conduct a fresh election within the time frame of the law.

Reacting to the judgement, Haruna who said the electoral umpire will take into consideration the 90 days stipulated by the law added that their position will be made now quickly.

“Since the 90 days for reelection falls within the November 16 earlier slated for guber election in the state, the electoral commission may fix the Kogi west reelection same day”, he said.
