Joel Matip Signs New Contract That Will See Him At Liverpool Till 2024

Liverpool’s centre-back, Joel Matip has now put pen to paper, inking a deal that will see him remain at Anfield till 2024.

The 28-year-old was rewarded for his excellent form since the turn of the year with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season.

The former Cameroon International has now secured his future at Merseyside having impressed Liverpool gaffer, Jurgen Klopp.

The former Schalke man who came from the Bundesliga outfit on a free transfer in the summer of 2016 was been a key figure in the Reds’ Champions League victory in the last campaign.

Matip has been exceptional at the heart of the defense, forming an enviable partnership with Dutchman Van Dijk, arguably the best in the whole of Europe.

“It’s a great feeling to be a longer part of the club,” the 28-year-old told Liverpool’s website. “It’s really just a great feeling.

“From outside, you know Liverpool is such a big club – but when you are inside, then you really get a feeling for how big the club is. In all the countries, the supporters are everywhere. It’s a massive and big club that I think every player would want to play for.”

Prior to this season, the Cameroonian had been rotated with the pair of Dejan Lovren but has since established himself in the squad since an injury to Joe Gomez last season opening up some space for him.

Matip has put up impressive showings to seal his spot in the squad and has now started six of Liverpool’s last eight games this season, scoring in the Red’s 3-1 win over Arsenal in August.

The Merseyside look unstoppable in their quest for a Premier League title and look comfortable at the back with the defensive pair of Matip and Van Dijk.

He missed Liverpool’s game against Leicester City but has assured fans that he would be fit for the game against Manchester United.
