Juventus Win Their First Supercopa Title Since 2015

A glancing header from Cristiano Ronaldo secured an eighth Super Copa title and the first since 2015 for Italian giants, Juventus, as they tipped AC Milan to a 1-0 win.

The two teams challenged for the trophy in the Saudi Arabian City of Jeddah on Wednesday. This is the 10th time the trophy will be contested for, outside of Italy.

The fixture is traditionally between the winners of the Serie A and Cup winners but a domestic double by Juventus last term made sure AC Milan, runners-up of the Coppa Ittalia, qualified for the cup tie instead.

AC Milan Striker, Gonzalo Higuain was dropped to the bench with match reports suggesting the Argentine was down with a fever. However, many believed it was as a result of the transfer rumours linking the 31-yr-old to the Stamford Bridge.

That said, it was former Real Madrid talisman and five time Balon D’Or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo who scored the only goal in the encounter. Ronaldo put the ball past the reach of the goal keeper after latching on to a cross from Pjanic.

This goal was more than enough to give the Italian giants their eight Super Copa title and the first title for Ronaldo in Italy.

To begin with, there were a few chances in the first half with Ronaldo being the closest. The Portuguese made an acrobatic volley from a ball that bounced off the ground but couldn’t quite meet the mark as he skimmed it past the crossbar.

On the other hand, it was Hakan Calhanoglu who first drew a smart save from former Arsenal goalie, Wojciech Szczesny.

Meanwhile, Patrick Cutrone attempted a shot at goal to put Milan in front but it was always going over the crossbar. It was Ronaldo who had the first and only goal for the night.

Milan Coach, Gennaro Gatusso tried to salvage a goal or to the very least some momentum when he introduced Higuaín. However, it wasn’t to be as Franck Kessie was sent off for a challenge on Emre Can.
