Kanu Nwankwo Made Special Assistant On Sports In Imo

Emeka Ihedioha, Governor of Imo State has announced a one-time Super Eagles captain and former Arsenal player, Nwankwo Kanu as his Senior Special Assistant on Sports matters.

Emeka Ihedioha made this announcement on Wednesday at the Governmemt house in the State capital, Owerri when the Nigerian football legend visited him according to a statement issued by the governor’s aide on new media, Izuchukwu Akwarandu.

The statement issued by Akwarandu read:

“The governor, Emeka Ihedioha, received one of the country’s football legends, Kanu Nwankwo, at the Government House, Owerri, on August 14, 2019.”

“Papilo, as fondly called by his fans, came to present his most recent CAF award, which was given to him at the just concluded Nations Cup in Egypt, to the sports-loving governor of Imo State. The star also presented a branded jersey to the governor.”

“The governor while welcoming the former Super Eagles goal poacher, announced Kanu Nwankwo as his Senior Special Assistant on Sports.”

According to the statement, Papilo who won the U-17 World Cup and Olympics in Nigeria colours would be dedicated to assisting the Ihedioha-led administration in rebuilding the sports sector of Imo state.

The Nigeria World Cup skipper founded the Kanu Heart Foundation which has helped save hundreds of lives.

Kanu, a well decorated Nigerian legend played for several top European clubs, Dutch side Ajax, Inter Milan of Italy, and English clubs Arsenal, West Bromwich Albion and Portsmouth.

Among his laurels during his time in Europe include a UEFA Champions League trophy, three FA Cup Winners medals, a UEFA Cup medal and two African Player of the Year awards among others.

Kanu remains a part of only a few players who have won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, Olympic Gold medal and a UEFA Cup.

The retired Nigerian International is also a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
