1. Lecturers Give Update on Strike as FG Meets Major Demand

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has provided update on the ongoing strike as the Federal Government on Monday, met one of its major demands which is approving the teachers’ union’s pension commission for the operation.

This is as the union has received the certificate of operation for Nigerian University Pension Management Company, NUPEMCO, from the National Pension Commission. ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, in a short message sent across to members of the union, on Monday, said ASUU received the certificate at about 11.20 am.

2. Military Exposes New Tactics by Insurgents

The military has introduced new tactics involving highly experienced and skilled fighter and technology from ISIS elements apparently dislodged from Syria and relocated to the North East of the country.

This was disclosed by the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, who declared that helicopter gunships and other fighter jets recently acquired had been deployed to neutralise the insurgents in the North East as a result of fresh onslaught on soft targets.

3. JAMB Registers 869,709 Candidates, Suspends 9 Centres for Malpractice

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) have announced that it registered 869,709 candidates for the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), which is scheduled to hold in March. JAMB stated this on its weekly bulletin from the office of the Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, on Monday.

The board also revealed that it has suspended nine Computer-Based Tests centres that breached the code governing the 2019 registration exercise.

4. NBA Strike Stalls Judicial Activities at FCT High Court

Activities were stalled at FCT High Court, as lawyers complied with directive of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), to boycott the courts nationwide for two days to protest suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen, Chief Justice of Nigeria.

The NBA, after its National Executive Committee meeting on Monday, resolved to boycott the courts nationwide for two days to protest Onnoghen’s suspension.

The NBA said the boycott was to press for the reversal of President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to suspend Onnoghen and appoint an acting Chief Judge.

5. I Have Never Run Away from Trial, Says Orji Uzor Kalu

‘’As long as I am healthy, I will go to court. I have never run away from trial. I am very prepared for trial,’’ Kalu said.

Orji Uzor Kalu, a former Governor of Abia State, says he is ready to face trial at the Federal High Court in Lagos over alleged N7,6 billion fraud preferred against him by the EFCC.

He said this on Monday, while taking questions from pressmen following the visit of President Buhari to his home in Bendel LGA of Abia State. He said he has never stolen from the treasury and that he is ready to face any trial.

6. We Are Placing Nigeria on Global Map Of Sugar Producers – Dangote

Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President, Dangote Group, says his investment in the sugar sector will place Nigeria on the global map of sugar producers while increasing employment and saving huge foreign exchange for the country.

He made his statements on Monday in Lagos during the 2018 Dangote Customers Celebration and Food Distributors Award Night, organised by Dangote Foods.

7. Nigeria to Dominate Trade in West Africa’s Power Market -TCN

Nigeria has attained the frequency control level required by member countries of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) to synchronise with and comfortably sell electricity to countries in the region and earn income, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has disclosed.

Speaking at the inauguration of a transmission transformer at its sub-station, the Managing Director of TCN, Mr. Usman Mohammed, stated that the TCN has with regards to the development, asked the West African Power Pool (WAPP) to synchronise Nigeria’s power grid with the rest of the region to enable it sell power to more countries other than Niger Republic, Togo and Benin Republic.

8. 2019 Budget Passes Second Reading at House Of Reps

Members of the House of Rep have passed the 2019 appropriation bill for a second reading. The bill was passed on Tuesday during plenary presided by the speaker, Yakubu Dogara.

The speaker, while putting the bill to vote, referred it to the committee on appropriations and all other relevant standing subcommittees.

The house had last week commenced debate on the appropriation bill which was presented by President Buhari.

9. Abia APC Chairman Kidnapped by Unknown Gunmen

The Abia State chairman of the APC, Donatus Nwankpa has reportedly been kidnapped by unknown gunmen on Monday night.

His P.A. escaped, but another party official wasn’t lucky to also escape.

10. Lagos Assembly Summons Ambode over Budget

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday urged Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to appear before it within one day on the controversy concerning this year’s budget.

The year’s Appropriation Bill has not been presented to the lawmakers, causing disagreement between the Executives and the Legislature. Last month, the governor sent the budget to the Assembly against the tradition of laying it before the Assembly.
