The popular quote “let food be thy medicine, thy medicine be thy food” is attributed to Greek Physician Hippocrates.
However, a research carried out by Diana Cardenas in 2013 claims the quote isn’t found anywhere in Hippocrates writings.
According to her, the quote which was discovered in 1926 became well known in the 1970s.
Hippocrates considered nutrition as one of the main tools a doctor can use in treatment hence the popularity of the quote.
Another statement about food reads: “In food excellent medicine can be found, in food bad medicine can be found; good and bad are relative.”
Although Hippocrates never saw food and medicine as one, it’s glaring that the physician was a strong proponent of diet and lifestyle regimen being tools for treatment by doctors.
What does the Bible have to say about the phrase “let thy food be thy medicine?”
A quick study of the Mosaic Law- the first five books of the Old Testament makes the food laws included seem random or contrived.
A closer study of the books shows that these laws express both the health benefits and dangers of the foods involved, especially considering the methods of food preparation in that period.
Raw or poorly prepared shellfish could carry dangerous bacteria while oily fish could be beneficial to health.
Fish oil has been connected to cardiovascular health, mental health and ocular health.
Studies have shown that the consumption of fish and fish products helps to prevent heart attacks, strokes or high blood pressure.
