Lionel Messi Lifts European Golden Boot For Record Sixth Time

Lionel Messi has been awarded the European Golden shoe for a record sixth time. The Barcelona talisman on receiving the award was quick to highlight the impact his teammates has had on his impressive performances.

It is the third consecutive year that the five-time Balon D’Or winner will scoop the award for scoring the most goals in a major league in Europe. He also lifted the gong in 2010, 2012 and 2013 and now has the highest number of that award.

The gong has been lifted by a Laliga player in the last 11 seasons with Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo winning thrice at Real Madrid and a further one at Manchester United. Former Atletico Madrid striker, Diego Forlan also won the award in 2009 during his stay at the Wanda Metropolitano.

“Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba, who are here, are two of the biggest reasons why I can receive this award. Without my team I could never have won one, this is a trophy for everyone, a recognition of the entire dressing room.

“The Champions League is something special and every year we want to win it, but we are aware that La Liga is the most important thing.

“It is what leads you to performing well in the Copa del Rey and in La Liga. We are at Barcelona and we aim to win everything.”

Lionel Messi found the net 36 times last term, earning for himself 72 points in the point system.

He still holds the record for the highest number of goals in a season (50) in the 2011/2012 season and scored 34 and 37 times in the previous two seasons.

The 32-year-old beat PSG star, Kylian Mbappe to the prize.

The Frenchman was the only player to push close to Messi in the race for the Golden Boot. The World Cup winner fired home 33 goals last term, only three shy of the 36 slotted home by the Argentina International.
