Lionel Messi’s Mum Admits To Being Surprised With Son’s Ballon D’Or Win

Lionel Messi’s mum, Celia Cuccittini has made an interesting revelation. According to the Barcelona talisman’s mum, the Ballon D’Or award presented to her son caught her by surprise.

Ceila Cuccittini admitted she didn’t foresee her son scooping another Ballon D’Or award since he last did in 2015.

Lionel Messi however beat Virgil Van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo who finished in second and third places respectively to clinch the award for a record sixth time.

In spite of the landmarks the Argentine continues to reach, his mum and family couldn’t conceive him being named world best player again.

“I’m super happy, we did not expect to win the prize. We thought that the fifth would be the last, so this was a beautiful surprise,” Ceila admitted on CNN Radio Argentina.

“He always excites me. He does not stop surprising us every day with what he achieves. And, on top of that, what a person he is, which is the main thing.”

Despite winning this latest gong, Messi still remains a divisive figure in Argentina as a section of the country’s fans still point to his disappointment in national colours as a sign of his preference with working with Barcelona rather than his national side.

Although Celia accepts that such criticisms are inevitable, she opines that they are rather too harsh and that her son shouldn’t always be singled out l in such manner.

“You can criticise without offending or without making fun,” the mother of the six-time Ballon D’Or winner said.

“And as a mother that obviously hurts.
“Obviously not everyone has to like him. The whole family already knows that we owe Argentina a debt. But who more than Lionel wants to win a World Cup or a Copa America?

“Of course it can be said when he plays badly. We do it ourselves. We tell him, I tell him.”
