Liverpool And Magnificent Mane Go Top Of The Log With Win Over Fulham

Liverpool will have James Milner’s penalty to thank for their slim victory over Fulham with their prowling and hovering movements in the Cottagers’ half not producing as much of a result as they would have hoped for.

Salah was once again far from the man we are pretty much used to. Despite notching so many shots, the Egyptian couldn’t find his feet in the right positions or the net either.

There is no question who Liverpool’s best player is at the moment as Mane scored his 11th in his last 11 games and nine in as many games and just as crucially earned the penalty that sent Liverpool top of the log.

It was expected that the Reds would come out tops but there was a dramatic twist to the game when Ryan Babel took advantage of a rare defending gaffe by Virgil Van Dijk to get his side into the game.

For seven nerve-wracking minutes it seemed like the Reds title hopes were all gone like a chaff in the whistling wind until James Milner scored from the penalty box after Sergio Rico had unnecessarily pulled Mane in the box.

There was that sense at the Craven Cottage that Fosu Mensah was the weak link in Fulham’s line-up and the Reds continuously exploited that.

Thrice, Fabinho sent a full-flighted diagonal cross to Trent Alexander-Arnold who then switched play to Andy Robertson who continuously gave Timothy Fosu Mensah a reason to regret making his first start in four months against a team like Liverpool and it was this sort of play that gave rise to Liverpool’s first goal.

Arnold found Robertson with a powerful cross and the left-back found Mane just outside of him. The Senegalese slipped a pass to Firmino who in turn returned the favour with a cut-back pass with Mane sending his shot over Rico.

Liverpool were stung and hit back by Babel but Milner converted a penalty to ensure that the Reds go top of the pile.
