Liverpool Stage A Repeat Of Instanbul 2005 Against FC Barcelona

Liverpool did the unthinkable in the most heroic manner when they overturned a 3-0 deficit to hammer Barcelona at Anfield. A reincarnation of Instanbul 2005 maybe.

The comeback looked all the more impossible given that the Reds were missing two of their attackers in Salah and Firmino but the never die say attitude of Liverpool stood strong.

Divock Origi swept the first one in after Ter Stergen appeared to have parried a Jordan Henderson shot.

Barcelona took the game by the scruff of its neck thereafter knowing that an away goal from then could turn the game on its head and end Liverpool’s hopes of staging a comeback.

Arturo Vidal combined with Philippe Coutinho on the left wing before the Brazilian sent the ball through to Alba who found Messi in a good position only to be denied by Alisson.

Messi on two different occasions shot wide off the upright and couldn’t end the game in the first forty-five minutes.

Liverpool took charge of the second half like a disciplined and organized Dothraki horde and got the reward in the 54th minute as substitute Wijanldum sent the ball under Ter Stegen having received a low cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Wijnaldum got on the scoresheet once more connecting to a cross from the other end and getting the goal with a powerfully struck header.

Now at 3-3 aggregate, it was anybody’s game but Liverpool with all the momentum looked dangerous with every attacking play they made.

Each time they surged forward, it looked like Barcelona were crashing out. Were the Catalans going to bottle this tie once again like they did last term against Roma?

Yes! Alexander-Arnold took a quick corner kick that found Divock Originin the box and the striker made no mistake about the sitter.

Barcelona pushed for a comeback but couldn’t try anything with Messi completely cut off. Barcelona’s dreams of a treble are all over and possibly Valverde with is.

This is Alisson’s second comeback against the Blaugranas with the first coming last season when he was Roma’s first choice goalie.

Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona (4-3 aggregate) it ended
